The primary reason they do it based on preferences is because someone that asks to work in a particular state has a better shot at staying at whatever facility they're assigned than someone that just says, "I want the job; send me anywhere!" If you ended up in Guam because you said you'd go anywhere, and you really wanted BNA, you'd put in for a transfer as soon as you could -- and then Guam would end up short a person.
not necessarily... I have several friends in the ATL tower and one friend just started there after applying OTS. He has been working in the tower for about 3 months.Yeah, but from the rumor mill on the other threads, ATL isn't taking OTS or new hires and is only taking transfers due to washouts. I don't know the whole truth on it, but I wouldn't count on being picked up for them anymore.

I'm a controller at IND, and i can tell you guys that pick FL & GA are out of luck. I went through the openings with our regional manager (which Indy is in the Ohio region) for all over the east side to try to find something for my buddy in FL or GA, and there was only one opening in Palm Beach, and like 2 or 3 openings in level 5 facilities which are a waste of time. Georgia was no better, they only had 2 openings in level 5 facilities in the middle of nowhere. As for the region i work in, the only thing available had looked to be cincinnati, and some cleveland center. Also, for those of you who think you can go to Atlanta, yes, they are hiring, but only for FPL's who want to transfer. My regional manager said that if you want to get picked up put Louisiana and MIssissippi........if anyone needs any help or info just hit me up, i can always go downstairs and ask the regional manager.

i am not going to deliberately attack this post, but i will say that some of the information provided is inaccurate...specifically in reference to Georgia. Maybe he is not looking at an updated list for Fiscal Year 2010, which of course started as result of Oct 1st (which im sure most of you already know), but I know that one specific facility that I am looking to go to here in Atlanta, according to a very dependable source, has an allotment for 60 people for fiscal year 2010. Of those 60, as of last week, only about 5 people had already been selected from the last PUBNAT to do selections I presume...my luck will be that they fill the majority of those slots with PUBNAT 7 people, and that I end up having to wait till FISCAL YEAR 2011, however, there are DEFINITELY openings..
Also, i dont know if this information is known to many, but each Facility Manager has the right to "HAND-PICK" 25% of his fiscal year allotment. For instance, if there number of openings is 60, then the facility manager is allowed to hand-pick from the list 15 of those individuals. Now if a matter of who that manager knows makes them exceptions to the rule or not, I do not know, as many of us probably never will. I also dont know if this applied nationwide or just here in Georgia, however, i will say that even in my short time of being a member here in the forums, it seems that many of the policies are uniform nationwide, but again, there is always room for me to be wrong, but thats just FOOD FOR THOUGHT...
My facility has an allotment of 3, but they aren't taking any because of reduced staffing numbers presented after FY2010 started. Just because a facility has an allotment of 60 doesn't mean they'll take 60.
By the way, which facility is that?
