Furlough Estimates

People keep saying that things don’t add up or that it’s going to cost the airline too much and it doesn’t make sense. I promise you, management isn’t putting out displacement bids and doom and gloom for fun. It’s because they see what they’re going to have to do. Set aside what you think makes sense.

But always at least consider the possibility of F.U.D.

Doubly so when taking into consideration management asking for concessions.

There will probably be clean-up bids beyond this, ALPA said. UNA number could change. In either direction.

Depressing times indeed. Got 2 weeks into what I thought was the rest of my career, loving everything. To not flying an airplane for years now. Happened so fast I don't think I still know what happened. Good luck everyone. Don't take any day out there for granted.

I thought Delta did the least international out of the big 3 and had JV's do a majority of flying. Something that was being negotiated. Nevertheless, still all 3 "rely" on international.
Fairly recently, Delta did the most trans Atlantic flying of any airline in the world, and was adding back destinations they had trashed a few years ago. This is going to hurt.

Right. I'm not saying this won't hurt or we weren't large intl carrier. I was just saying I thought we had the least amount of wide body intl flying of the big 3 and something that was being negotiated in the new contract. The OP post I was replying to was suggesting only 2 of the 3 legacies are going to feel pain because of international flying and that we specifically are relying on intl flying. Like all worldwide intl carriers do.

I don't know where you were on 9/11. Black swan events aren't ordinary pattern bargaining. If you are experiencing F.U.D it's because you SHOULD be afraid... the level of uncertainty is high... and even management doubts that they can be successful in this business environment. This is about the survival of the business enterprise. If you think it passes without concessions, you're dreaming.

The optics of the whole thing will continue to distort, to push either sides agenda. It’s why I’m doing my best to stay informed. Even though I’m just a pawn in the game.

Yeah bro nobody here works anywhere. Anything else, like I don't know PUTTING WHO YOU WORK FOR IN YOUR SCREEN NAME, is asking for trouble.

I basically get paid by an airline to fly OD green helicopters these days. I don’t name the helicopter operator for reasons and don’t name the airline for reasons. And I used to have my real name as my screen name but don’t for reasons. Sucks. It would be cool to be transperant in this community to help others but it just isn’t practical these days.

I know you. Your name is John Smith, you get paid by ClownAir to fly green Hueys for the South Vietnamese Army as an FMS contractor.

No no no. I get paid by DT Air to fly “cargo” across “borders.”

If you gotta start now, it's too late.

Amen to that.

I was an FO for over eleven years at my present company. Financially, it was tough most of the time. I became an expert at living paycheck-to-paycheck. I'm just grateful that I was an older career changer and all of the student loan stuff was paid off.

I still think that our new pilots are going to have an amazing career, but the next year is going to suck long and hard. I can't help but worry about the people I work with: The new FO's, the new flight attendants, and the several of my friends that "just now" went on to major airlines (or upgraded at major airlines). It seemed like a good move at the time.

There's times I've prayed for "good things to happen"... when really, I should have been praying for strength and courage and resilience.

Yup. Plus the usual suspects that will write your chief pilot and said “Your captain called me a stupid dummy head online and I’m MAD!”

Yeah, that always turns out well for the reporter. :)
