Furlough Estimates

I still don't consider a reduction in guarantee to be a concession. Unless you're on reserve, you are paid when you turn a wheel. Lots of people are being paid right now to stay home and NOT turn a wheel.

That leaves us with two choices.

1. They can get rid of the number people for whom there is no wheel to turn or,

2. You can spread the work out among the entirety of the seniority list - yes, dropping below contractual guarantee temporarily

Once there are more wheels to turn the line values increase naturally until crossing the CBA threshold, after which the CBA is restored.

I guess having been through this a time or two I am of the mindset that we can act as a union and protect one another when times are bad, so that we can act as a union and stand with one another when times are good.

Yeah but the way that email reads, it's basically trying to hold hostage the 1,900ish guys and tell them that if the other Delta compadres take reduced ALVs, your job could be saved. Divide and Conquer technique. Their management has really shown their true colors in these tough times. Amazing how other non-union employee groups got the same profit share program as the pilot group (to keep them happy and a union off property) but then when pilots were offered a SIL, it disappeared because the non-union groups would have been offended and then maybe one day try to unionize. These are the tactics you'd expect to see at a crap undercutting regional airline. Not at a world class legacy airline. But to quote the famous saying, "it is what it is."

How many junior people are in the bottom of various categories being reduced? Those are essentially "free" furloughs due no domino effect category downgrade training costs.

Yea i agree. Apparently the last bid set up the furloughs and unless anything has changed there won’t be any more displacements.

COBRA is expensive... especially if you haveba family. Not needing insurance gives you a lot more options as far as what job you can take to make money.
I guess that’s a fair point; my friend who got one is still rather unhappy about this situation. Even with a family.

Is this legitimately better than furlough? Semi-serious.
That’s the big debate here. We’ve lowered the cost for the company to have pilots “somewhat current.” This is a double edge sword because it allows the company to put more pilots on less/no pay without incurring those costs but also allows some pilots crucial benefits.

I’m not wild about this the more I think about it. Granted, I don’t work there, but that’s the sort of arrangement I would be loathe to sign off on. Especially because my buddy would have gotten 2 months of furlough pay and now he gets no months and a bill for benefits.

Hardest part of playing chicken is knowing when to flinch.

A pilot can always not bid for those options and take the furlough. To be honest, I’m not sure what I think about it. I think options are always good but this situation sucks.

I believe they pay you the first month something like 22 hours and from one of the calls that’s basically to cover all the benefits.

It's bidable. If somebody doesn't want it and wants to take their furlough pay and go out the door, they can do that as well. There is a very narrow group that this is good for, but when you have chipped away at all the big ways to save a pilot, you start getting down to the small ones.

They published a displacement bid here last night that chops 170 of 865. Hopefully about 70 of those will be protected with long term leaves and early outs, but for the remaining 100, we are down to trying to leverage the little things to soften the blow as best we can. I've lost a lot of sleep over it during the last 2 weeks and have come to the realization that, unlike Pokémon, no matter how many ideas you come up with, you can't save them all, unless the company is willing to pay a little extra to achieve the goodwill.
