Furlough Estimates

Long story short, as a guy from the west coast (the PNW no less), the term "BBQ" means "grilling" to us. True BBQ isn't a thing really. I never really had it growing up, only really after college when I was in the military in the US south/TX. I don't think it is as much them thinking what they do is "BBQ" in your terms......it just is standard phraseology for putting meat on a grill, aka a BBQ. Much like "skiing" to us means up in the mountains. Southerners qualify the statement with "snow" skiing. Nobody from where I come from would ever say "snow skiing". It is assumed.
The PNW has one amazing smoked meat, and that is salmon. Mmmmmm. I do agree about BBQ meaning grilling.

yup, you are right. Salmon 15 different ways, and all of them good....my favorite food really. Never knew how much I missed it until the only option was farmed Norwegian fat body fillets. Also, my neighbor just gave me 3 lbs of fresh caught Dungeness crabbies because they couldn't eat their full catch. I can't even begin to describe how awesome that is for those that don't know it. Currently shopping for simple boat to take me and crab trap out into the bay to do my part in marine wildlife management :)

I applaud their optimism that they wouldn't need a leave package earlier on, but..... They just now started working on it? Hopefully they can come up with something that will save some jobs.

Really starting to get worried. Well worrieder. Can’t get a first class medical until at least March, so flying jobs are out. Need insurance to pay for treatments to get medical back. No job is no insurance. Crap is getting really existential here...
Best argument for not tying health care to work.

Turns out it’s hard (perhaps even impossible) to work when you’re not healthy.

Anyway. Here we are.

Are/were you ALPA? I'd think this would be a perfect time to utilize some of the resources your dues money pays for.

Growing up and living in Maryland, "crabs" means one and one thing only- blue crabs covered in Old Bay. My wife introduced me to dungeness, snow, and red crab and I'm completely ruined on blues, give me one dungeness over a dozen blues any day of the week, thank god the asian markets sell them live around here :)

*Sigh*

I thought Spirit was doing okay. Clearly not but i had a wrong impression there

Don't worry most the people here had the wrong impression since management kept sending out rainbow and puppy dog letters. I can't believe how naive some of these folks are thinking that everyone else was going to furlough but we wouldn't, and at the same time feel a little bad for them because if this is their first time in an airline downturn/economic downturn then they just believed the sunshine that was being blown our way. Half of them still don't believe it I have heard the "it's just a warn letter that doesn't mean they will furlough." Which while technically is true, if we are losing a 100 million a month as stated yesterday then that tips the odds pretty far in favor of furloughing.

You mean those crabs only good for crab cakes? What kinda cake is Maryland famous for? :)

Brutal.

Im famous for my conspiracy theories in some circles but i keep hoping every airline is playing possum to put political pressure on representatives and senators to get us more welfare- bailout... Money.

And yes if I've ever sniffed your direction for YOUR conspiracy theory, I'm a hypocrite. Yours was bad though and not believable. Mine are flawless and real.

.

It would be nice if they would give us more money and save jobs but I’m not counting on it. It’s just been interesting watching from the inside on how two different airlines have handled this/put out communication. My wife’s airline has been very upfront since day one stating it’s really bad and we don’t want to furlough but we will if it comes down to it because the goal is to survive. My airline has been like “it’s fine, it’s fine nothing to see here.” They still don’t have any plans to offer early outs (as per our communication yesterday) and haven’t announced any kind of long term leaves. I’ve just been through this before and can see the writing on the wall

I don’t think they are playing possum, their need is real, but the large numbers of WARN letters being sent out are definitely to get the attention of politicians so they can get more cash.

36000 furloughs at United, yeah right.

Why don’t you believe it? CSA, reservations, front line employees can all be spooled up very quickly if they need to be. It’s a job that can be done at entry level, even if it’s not done well. It’s the sad reality. Pilots, not so much.

Heresy! Blues are still my favorite over snow, dungeness, etc. We catch them here in Florida and I have to reckon, they may be tastier and larger than the ones in the potomac/Chesapeake...

The only crabs bigger in Florida are the ones you don’t want to bring home.

That said, I remember growing up in MD and we could take some chicken necks, string, a net, and cooler down to the docks and come home with more than we can eat. Not really the case anymore.

Unless and until travel demand recovers, which won't happen until the virus situation is fixed, at the risk of repeating myself endlessly, I'd believe it's mostly an accurate number. And then there's what GDP did in the last quarter.

We are screwed. At least I have three bedrooms I can rent out when my friends and I become unemployed.
