Free in-house Delta Pilot Job Fair

Two word. Motor Oil.

That's all employees are, motor oil.

:stir:

At least according to "someone."

I still don't think he was that far off base. Too many of you took it personally, but when it comes to business he was speaking the truth.

To paraphrase Doug in my mind- be the right kind of motor oil. If Delta wants 10W-30 and you are 0W-20 then either Delta is not a good fit for you or time to start changing that formula.

Agreed in principle, but that still doesn't have any relation to giving Doug any kind of beef over this threat.

I guess you're saying that I'm disrespecting him by expressing the opinion in his thread?

Totally not at all the point, either in second or third order effect.

Maybe it's a difference in opinion or experience. I get what you are saying and the frustrations that some people feel about the job fairs. But I can tell you that I have attended 2 large job fairs and came away more motivated than ever. They have both been very positive experiences for me and have lead to good networking opportunities. As I would tell the recruiters "we are all in the woods trying to find our way." There is information gained from talking to the actual people that will be selecting candidates. You're right Delta doesn't need to do these because they have 15,000 applications. But I'm glad that they do. If anything to de-clutter the bad information and rumors on what they are looking for. The facebook recruitment page has been a huge part of that as well. I won't deny that it's a process. You gain experience, grow, make mistakes, learn from said mistakes, take on new challenges, update your app and so on. There are a lot of awesome guys that get too wrapped up in how much BS they think a job fair is and don't see it as the once, twice, or thrice opportunity in the year to cut through the noise and show someone in person who you are and what you're about. At least that's what's worked for me. I'll be interviewing with Delta next month and couldn't be happier.

@mastermags - Thank you. Seriously. It's very helpful and the wind in my sail to hear that.

Admittedly, I do glance at the home weather station and see that it's quite nice outside, high clouds, light breeze and think, "Here I thought I was solving a problem (high cost of job fairs), helping people by giving them a peek over the castle wall" because no one else on the aviation internet is doing it and begged the powers that be to let me basically pre-announce it on Jetcareers to give our community a 'head start' on bidding and making arrangements to get there…

89 degrees outside. Light breeze. High clouds. Windchimes…

Some in our community are going to walk away with an interview date and become new employees, I can absolutely guarantee that. Some are just going to be on the internet, frustrated.

Doug, thanks for letting us know. Some people feel jaded, but I think it's much better kept to themselves. Me personally, I'm going to do (and am doing) whatever it takes to move on when the time comes, and I thoroughly LOVE my present job. Sure it has it's moments, but what job doesn't. Give a pilot a sack of gold and he or she will complain about how heavy it is... That's just not a way I want to live my life or my career.

@Derg, it's the wealth of information posted here that makes me want to keep pushing forward in my career.

Unfortunately I won't be able to make this event because the wife and I are wrapping up our first anniversary vacation. But it's because of JC that I have found out about the job fairs and networking events that I will be attending in the near future to make that next step. You have done a great job sir, I know running forums can be a thankless job at times, but here's a Thank You from another satisfied member!

Apparently so.

Imagine, if you will, if this thread were five pages of people forming meet 'n greets in ATL, sharing a little advice about "do's and don'ts" and job fair/hunt strategies, maybe a little resume exchange to help one another hone down their resumes, maybe even dispel some rumors in advance of a career fair.

But what do we have?

SMDH...

I used to read posts like this and think I had better shut my mouth, and understand I should listen more and talk less. Then, I see it posted again, and realize I still need to shut my mouth and listen more and talk less.

Great idea! I think both Widget and any prospective Widgeteers will benefit from this event. And a big thank you to @Derg for the advance notice!

Soooo, where are we meeting for libations? I get the feeling it'll involve Virginia Ave after dark. #livedangerously

Oh lord, I know someone here that's going to suggest "Irish Bred"… shudder

@DPApilot

Thank you Doug from posting this.

I for one I'm static to hear this news, I have been trying to land an interview at Delta for the past few years and I think this is a great opportunity and like you said, it is FREE. People will never be happy. I think people expect to fill out the app and automatically get the job.

You have no idea how many "I applied two years ago, why haven't they called?" my friend hears.

And then you look at a PDF copy of the application and it's an absolute hot mess and unreadable.

Or their recommendations are just a bunch of other new hire pilots, who generally shotgun those things out in their first month online because of their newfound popularity at their previous carrier.

Then you might say, "Hey, I can review your resume, lemme see" then "WOW! Where to start. You do know this is supposed to be a brochure for who you really are, yes?"

My friend tells me a lot of stories like this.

Of all the responses I've conjured:

@DPApilot : put down the shiv. That won't be necessary. Not yet, at least.

Delta, Derg: Thank you for setting this up. Just. Plain. Awesome.

I'll be there, hungry as ever.

Let's EAT!!!

Just changed my bid and ironed my suit. Hopefully I'll be able to get some feedback on my path finishing school and how to be more marketable in the coming years.

Discount was good. Beer was terrible! I'll take the more expensive big ass mugs from Spondivits.

I echo the sentiments of mastermags. I agree that what you've (@Derg) done is/has been unparalleled by anyone in recent online history through JC. I joined in high school as a senior, unsure of what path to pursue after 9/11. Since then just about every bit of information regarding flight training, certificates/ratings/medical questions, and airline operations, I learned through JC. Countless pieces of good work and posts by various folks over the years have made this a great place. I definitely appreciate the time, effort, and money you've put into this place since 2000.

I know a major complaint of job fairs is the cost associated with it, so if a company offers one free of cost at/near their own HQs then that is newsworthy. I realize you started the thread for that reason, and had my company offered a free job fair at/near its HQs, I would have started a thread as well. The end goal being to try and help someone to help get them where they want to go in their career, which is the point of this thread and ultimately the point of JC.

It's just hell week. Make a cake and pop the champagne! I'm a legacy for this legacy!

Don't forget the branding iron!
