FBO service

I'm not saying you should grease the wheels, but a Falcon pilot once said "We need a lav dump" and handed me a $100 bill simultaneously.

Heroic measures were involved that evening. ;)

At home base? Not gonna happen.

And last I checked, "dumping lavs" IS in the line service tech job description. I'm not tipping you for doing your job, unless its a HORRIFIC nuclear butt explosion in a honey bucket...that's worth a $20.

I do not crap at an FBO, but I am just happy when this does not occur.

Yeah, that shouldn't have to happen at home base. It was nice when it did but not necessary. You treat your base tenants like gold because they are the ones primarily paying the bills.

This post brought to you by beta from my iPhone.

One of the best things about my current job is that I choose the airport and the FBO. No one looks over my shoulder. Must be why I haven't darkened the doorway of a Signature (*spit*) for years. Now, I grant you, we don't take all that much fuel, so the hypothetical loss of our business might not mean that much, but it feels good to be able to "vote with your feet". If someone forwarded my FBO survey to my boss, he'd probably put it straight in the circular file, but if he didn't, it would be to call back and ask them why the hell they thought he'd care.

That is BS that your survey got back to your boss, but pick your battles wisely.

Autothrust Blue I agree with you. I too was tipped a lot in various ways in my days as a line guy as well.

I see line service guy/gal just as I see wait staff at a restaurant. They are there to serve you. These guys and gals aren't making a ton of cash, the FBO is. I personally do what I can to reward the line service people; it doesn't take much and it always doesn't take cash.

One of the worst things about being an "Acting Captain" at my last job (that's where you're the PIC, sign the paperwork, but they pay you as an F/O...true story) was being unable to tip a reasonable amount for line circus going above and beyond the call. You sort of wanted to say "dude, thanks so much, but I'm going to have to scrimp to make rent this month. I'll buy you a beer if you want to hear the story..."

If I'd turned in a tip as an expense, they'd have laughed about it for weeks. *#$&(#*

The bold is what I am really having trouble with. "You" can't stand up for yourself anymore. I worded the survey in such a way that it wasn't calling out any one line worker in particular but the overall level of service we receive during the "wee hours". The boss did care, he wants me to apologize....

Ask him exactly what he wants you to apologize for. Apologize for responding honestly to a survey? Apologize for being concerned that the company is not getting its dollar's worth? Ask him what is to be gained by an insincere apology obviously made under pressure. Ask him if this is the support you can continue to expect when it REALLY matters.

Of course, it'll get done (or at least any line rat worth their paycheck will get it done). The question is the amount of exuberance. I'd never been so excited to dump a lav.

I don't expect it to be done expeditiously. Hell, we're having it done at home base because we're done with our flying for the day. But, when I come back for a trip in 4 or 5 days, it damn well better be done.

I lost count at eight times that it hadn't been done.

I miss flying into Banyan at FXE. Used to take my wife there when she had to spring clients out of the detention center in Broward. She got too accustomed to it - next time we flew into an FBO at KBFE (figurative) she was like "where's the red carpet?"

We see a lot of over-reactions and inconsistencies at our FBO after mistakes are made. A 172 wingtip might get bent while being pushed into a hangar, and the next day a policy comes down that you need three walkers and a tug to move an airplane from one side of the ramp to another.

With line employees you get what you pay for. They're not paid much, they're given lots of responsibility, and the opportunity to make mistakes are huge. Sounds like every other job in aviation these days.

I once had an argument with a line guy who said he put fuel in an airplane minutes earlier while the tanks dipped less than the total fuel load ordered (and supposedly delivered)... his eyes where deeply blood shot and was clearly stoned. That was a fun day.

Life isn't fair and everything won't work the way it is supposed to but if you decide to go to war over be prepared to pay with your job. Some management teams believe they can do no wrong anything said to the contrary is taken personally by them and they react like kids. They then fall in to the mentality if you think it is broke then we'll hire someone else that doesn't think we are wrong...

This sounds very familiar....
