Darnit!! Delta to Block Porn on In-Flight Wi-Fi

Oh it's ok! I'll be sure to stretch the centerfold page of my playboy magazine (that I purchased in the airport terminal) all the way open while sitting in seat 15B...in uniform!:sarcasm:

"Would you care for a magazine miss?"

"Do you have anything light"

"hmm...how about this leaflet famous Jewish sports legends"

...sorry had to throw in the Airplane! reference :D

Spoke too soon?

American Airlines to Filter Pornographic Content on the Gogo Inflight Internet System
Tuesday October 7, 5:31 pm ET
FORT WORTH, Texas, Oct. 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Based on the feedback of our customers and employees, American Airlines is working with Aircell® to implement technology to filter pornographic content over the Gogo® inflight Internet service.
Since the launch of Gogo, American has not experienced any reported incidents of customers viewing inappropriate content via the Gogo service. However, we believe this is an appropriate measure to take. More details will be forthcoming as the company finalizes its plans.

I saw that this morning! :laff:

Actually found it rather surprising.

This is all a pointless gesture to quell any outcry from the "think of the children" crowd. It's not that I think it's appropriate to allow people to view this stuff in public...But what makes you think they don't already have their own personal collection stored on their harddrive (which can be viewed WITHOUT an internet connection)? I don't see people looking at this stuff on their laptops as it is, and I doubt the chance of it would increase just because they have access to the web.

If someone keeps it to him or herself, what's the problem?

If they had left it alone, most people wouldn't bother. Since they had to go and mess with it, now people will try to get around their firewalls.

I have no problem with the XXX content being blocked and I have no problem them with restricting bandwidth hogging apps.

I for one would not want my children exposed to that content on a flight. FA's should not have to do the policing; they already have enough to deal with anyways. Besides what can they really do if some one refuses to stop?

MQAORD would you want your kids to watch xxx content on the laptop from the guys 1 row up. What about all the UM's on flights. Who's going to look out for them when the guy in the next seat starts watching xxx....

You don't need the internet to watch porn on a laptop 1 row up. You don't even need a laptop - there are loads of portable DVD players out there.

Considering that low life scum porn watchers :sarcasm: are not currently using portable DVD players or laptops to offend children on aircraft having internet access is not going to suddenly mean that they now will want to surf for porn.

I have to laugh because a friend gave me his copy of Jackass 2 to watch during a resent flight and I ended up turning it off because it was to gross and I felt uncomfortable that someone else could be seeing what I was watching. I hope most PAX would do the same when confronted with questionable media in a public setting.

I think it'll be a bandwidth issue before it's a content issue.

So, you don't see it, the person keeps it to himself, but you don't want him viewing it??

How about you do something moral and stay out of other people's affairs. :whatever:

So, you're telling me what to do - while telling me not to tell others what to do?!?! Sounds like you're a fan of self-defeating arguments...

I never said it was an airlines job to make people moral so it's hysterical anyone suggested that. Obviously, by blocking it, the airline is not enabling such stuff to be done on/with their equipment...Is there something wrong with that? Is it really a bad thing?

I would have left you completely alone until you expressed a will to control what others do. Nothing self defeating. I am just a fan of people letting others do whatever they like provided it doesn't negatively effect another. If someone watches porn on an aircraft and no one around them is the wiser, that fits the scenario. If you or your family got a peek at it, then you would have justification to have it stopped, but not before.

Who did this? Not I.

Obviously, you are wrong. Not having a pipe to get it live while on board does not stop it from already existing on your hard drive, as has already been pointed out. As to whether it is a good or bad thing, the airline is free to do what they want, and just like the TSA with security, they are not really doing anything to effect the issue, but to those who don't know any better, they are.

I agree with Daren here.

Of course I don't want my kids seeing porn someone a row up is looking at. I'd ask the individual to put it away same as if they had a Hustler out for all to see.

My point is that porn is already out there for viewing on airplanes in print form and has been for many, many years. If people refuse to be discreet and surf away when asked they you do the same thing you do with a copy of Hustler or any other print porn, you take it away and give it back at the end of the flight. It also falls under following crewmember instructions, if they refuse to comply the crew can call the cops on them for noncompliance upon arrival.

If someone needs porn so much on a five hour flight, they are not going to rely on the airplanes Wi-fi. They will have already pre planned to have stuff downloaded to their computer or have it in print form. This is an easy way to calm the masses, but not really do anything in the end. Kinda like the TSA.

I do understand that stuff is already out there and there are people that have no common sense as to when an appropriate time to view it is. Back in my Saab days my carrier did have to have a pax removed in cuffs for watching xxx videos on a flight after the FA advised to him to stop.

It still doesn't bother me that airlines are choosing to block it. It may be morals but more likely it is their legal departments trying to limit liablity by not being a supplier of it.
