Continental UAL to merge

Don't look at this in a negative light! It means jobs for more pilots. I used to think regional expansion was a bad thing, but you know what? If mainline pilots want to farm out work, who am I to stop them?

Everyone can fly for beans now! :D

The way the airlines business is going in America today, in the near future your choices of airlines will be:

1) International Airways (all the Legacies combined into one)
2) Domestic Airways (all Majors and so forth combined together)

:)

SWA, welcome to IAH......

Here's another funny one I read:

first order of business will be to fire half the mechanics at both places and hire "migrant" aircraft workers (cycle all the aircraft repairs through indonesia), then cut the pilots and flight attendants pay, take everyone who is left and reduce their retirement and when that is all done give the executives a great big bonus for making all the tough decisions.

SWA, welcome to IAH......

Actually, SWA just pulled out of IAH in the past few years. Most people think it was Hobby that was part of the original Dallas-Houston-San Antonio triangle. It was actually IAH, though.

Just got an email from Jeff and it is official. Apparently this will be the new look - CAL Colors with United's name.

Here is a link to Jeff's letter informing the employees:

CalCapt (or whoever the hell you are today after the merger)...Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is this:

The Painting of "United" over the present CAL livery is lame and stupid. The only logical thing that can be done is to rename the combined carrier Varney Speed Lines because both airlines have a common founder. This only makes sense and is more cool than what is being done.

Additionally, you must use your power as a senior Captain with Varney Speed Lines to add some Lockheed Orions to the current fleet. I will fly them for the price of a small studio apartment in Houston and food. I'll even wash it when I'm done:

The ATC conversations will be interesting.....United 123, New united colors, that are the same as the old continental colors.....Continental 123, with our old paint, but it says United on the side..... who knows?

Capt pay at the regional airlines is far from beans. Its FO payrates which are predicated on quick upgrade that is beans.

Really? Then why do most second year FOs at majors make what I make as a 4th year CA? Heck, guys at SWA make over $2000 more a MONTH than I do as a CA. No, I'd say CA pay at the regionals is still abysmally low in comparison. I'd take a pay cut going to most places my first year, but I'd be right back or darn close to what I'm making now at second or third year.

It sure is abysmally low compared with the rest of the non-regional industry.

In the case of Southwest, the difference is around 87 seats.

Paid on a per seat basis, ExpressJet pays better than Continental when comparing 737-900 rates against EMB-145 rates at 10 year captain.

Continental - 173 seats on the 737-900, pay is $167 per hour, and the company pays you $0.96 per seat per hour that you operate.

ExpressJet - 50 seats on the EMB-145, pay us $80 per hour, and the company pays you $1.60 per seat per hour that you operate.

If Continental had that rate for 173 seats, so 173 * $1.60, then the hourly rate would be $276.80 per hour.

The problem is the number of seats, not the pay rate itself. If we're paid by the number of seats, then ExpressJet is paid MORE PER SEAT than Continental.

We need to lose this attitude of thinking a 50 seat jet should pay the same amount as a 173 seat jet. If we want more money, then the airplane needs to make more number, and it needs more seats.
