Continental UAL to merge

I wonder what this will mean for the regional carriers of both airlines.

Hopefully shrink. CAL is the one that is supposed to takeover decisions for the merged airlines so whatever their current RJ philosophy is will probably prevail. UA pilot union is fully committed to shrinking regional capacity. We shall see.

Not a chance. You think they'd really give up ALL of those 70 seat RJ's?

No way, no how.

CAL loses scope, 100 seat aircraft at regionals within 5 years.

Well you damn well know that every 70 seat airplane at UAL will still fly for the comnied carrier out of EWR and IAH.

There is no effen way that the surviving scope is no 51+ jets. Not phyically possible. There is a greater chance of me in bed with Mariska Haggarty tonight than CALs scope surviving.

Aviation has always been a "never say never" industry.......

Excellent news! This industry needs consolidation to get rid of excess capacity and get the legacies back to profitability. Great, great news. I believe American and Airways will be forced to merge next.

Funny thing is mergers are always touted as a synergy where 1+1=3 when in reality most mergers barely make 1+1=1.5.

Mergers are usually like train wrecks. Those who can jump before the collision often do well. Those still on the train when they meet just have to live with the aftermath.

A good friend of mine who follows closely the airlines noted that merging airlines is like merging warring Indian tribes.. er.. native American communities. Each has its own customs, mores and totem poles. He also noted that in most mergers within 12-18 months the merged carrier suffers a fatal accident.

.

While the USAirways/America West merger was, and appears to still be, a clusterbuck; how is the Delta/NWA merger going so far?
