Continental UAL to merge

While the USAirways/America West merger was, and appears to still be, a clusterbuck; how is the Delta/NWA merger going so far?

That depends on who you talk to. Funny thing is the NW big iron is coming to ATL and some of the old Southern/Republic guys who were commuting to MSP and DTW are now going to get to fly out of here and some machines from DL are moving to other bases. This is what I hear anyway.

I enjoyed most of my time with the airline but am just ecstatic I am no longer there even if my Citation job is vanishing at the end of May. My time at PI was part of the golden years, good pay, good crews, 727 and decent trips. It would be hard to duplicate.

Well.....crap! This does not bode well for The US Airways group....nope...not one dang bit. If the slot deal doesn't happen we are royaled. Well, I hope they do it right and all you guys directly effected make out okay.

You can use the link button to do it too.

1.right click highlight a tag, like UA/CAL to merge
2.press the globe/link button above
3.paste link

Ditto on the train wreck. From what I hear, a merger was expected with the new guy running CAL. Too bad.

Ironically enough next week the ALPA Executive Board (which are the MEC Chairmen) is meeting. Going to be a VERY interesting couple of days...

US Air posted a very small loss this past quarter, and surprisingly seems to be doing fairly well. Their cash on hand even went up by something like $500 million.

US Air and all the other airlines will benefit with less competition. In the airline world bigger doesn't equal better or more profitable.

Plus my guess is the Justice department will want to see some spinoff of routes so US Air may grab some. Also keep in mind that US Air and UAL still codeshare.

US Air does not have the best history of holding on to cash on hand. If you look at the financials, $500 mil isn't that much.

There is a company with about $1bln in revenue that has over $600 mil. Much more impressive ratio.

Realistically, there's no way scope will hold. Both airlines will call off the merge if it means having to break the 70 seat contracts, pay the contractors millions for breaking the contract, pay millions to obtain mainline 70 seaters, launch a mainline 70 training department, obtain simulators, than train thousands of mainline pilots to fly them.

We all wish the scope would hold for this merger but its not economically feasible, if not impossible. CAL and UAL pilot groups would be wise to spend their negotiating capital on getting a firm no furlough clause like DAL/NWA, getting pay raises and making sure the scope never goes above 70 seats.

Correct me if I am wrong but dont some carriers purchase the regional jets that other companies fly? Or do they do it in the form of capacity purchase agreement? Either way if scope goes get ready for certain "regionals" to fly 737's.

Why would CAL want 70 seat airplanes when it cost them about the same to out outsource 70 seat flying as as it dose to do the flying in house on the 500/700.

Maybe but that carrier isn't a legacy, better than American who lost half a billion this past quarter!

I'm not too optimistic about scope, but what do those in the know think of grandfathering the current flying in? Limiting the number of 70 seaters at the combined CAL/UAL to the number currently on property in UAX colors?

At least this will draw fire from the RAH dealings for awhile.

Bombardier is introducing the new CRJ 4000 which will carry 400 pax. The combined CAL/UAL carriers is outsourcing all flying to RAH and will simply sell the tickets. I played golf with Tilton this morning so its true. RAH is still satan.

Oh yeah, I forgot you golf with him.

I just hope they don't put a cargo door in it.

Did you have a tee time scheduled with Lorenzo this weekend? I'm interested in his perspective. ;) :D

I love being a hoar. If ALPA gives me a job I'd sing "Look for the Union Label" on my way to work. If Lorenzo gave me a job I'd spend the commute thinking of ways to maximize profits at the expense of everyone but me. I'm flexible that way.
