Comair Crash today (fatal)

Anyone know what time the crew got in to LEX last night? I am under the impression that LEX is not a pilot base and they flew that plane in probably late last night?

I imagine if they got in at say 10PM they probably didnt make it to the hotel room till 11:30. Probably took an hour or so to wind down and finally fall asleep putting their sleep time between midnight and maybe 4AM so they can be at the airport to fly at 6AM? Any of that sound possible?

Also, anyone read anything about the FO? Is he going to be OK? Some of the stories coming out are just sad with this whole thing. A couple just got married yesterday and was taking this flight to start their honeymoon...

:(

Comair will be fine.

The "RFP", in my opinion, was a shot across the bow to all of DCI about costs. Methinks they were giving Skywest something to whip the ASA guys with in their negotiations and pressure the Comair flight attendants.

To Administrator, Mr. Doug Taylor, and everyone else at JC,

Hi, my name is Lauren, and I am a TV producer for an English-language news show with Japan's public broadcasting corportation. (www.nhk.or.jp) I am also a private pilot.

Forgive me for my ignorance, but how are Delta Connection and Comair related? Are these the same company??

Also can anyone out there send me a photograph of the same type CRJ that crashed?? One that says COMAIR. I would like to use the picture on a TV news story, so I would need a photo that YOU personally took, of which the rights do not belong to anyone else. Anyone that could help out it would be much appreciated.

Thank you,
Lauren Cooper

ComAir operates under a codesharing agreement as a feeder for Delta. These flights are marketed as Delta Connection.

I hate hearing these news stories, and I also hate the rush to blame that I hear on TV and even here on JC. There will be pleanty of time for that in the coming days, now I just want to say RIP.

A friend of mine at CMR told me the bid pairing was for getting in just around midnight on FRIDAY night. So they had (per the bid pairing anyways) 28 hours.

Hi Lauren-

I think the most important thing to remember during an accident such as this is the sensational aspect of it and our thirst for immediate answers.

Airplanes don't crash for a single reason, but it's usually the culmination of a large amount of causal factors which haven't been explored yet.

Anything you see in this thread is largely speculation.

The most important thing to remember is that, often times, what we think is the most obvious reason for a plane crash usually turns out not to be what actually caused it.

The NTSB will look at all factual information, from the human factors, to air traffic control, to the condition of the aircraft, to the dispatchers, pretty much anything and everything relating to the event and make a determination on "why" what happened, happened.

You're going to see a lot of media speculation on the internet and other news sources but I think it's important to be patient and wait for the NTSB to publish their report.

You're probably going to talk to a lot of people who, quite frankly, don't know jack.

Another sad day for aviation. :(

True, but for me, it's another reminder to say thanks to all of you in the industry for the millions and millions of miles and hours you fly safely as well. This incident, as tragic as it is, reminds us that flying isn't 100% safe, but the professionalism and high standards set by you in the industry helps it come close.

I am one who, for whatever reason, takes flying for granted. I'm as confident of the professionalism of those inside the cockpit as I am of myself when I drive to work. Be that good or bad, I do feel safe with you on the flight deck.

Keep maintaining your high standards of excellence.

Dear Mr. Taylor,

Thank you for the quick reply!!
Of course I realize there is a ton of speculation going on regarding the crash, and I don't intend to sensationalize it any more on my own news show. FYI, the script of the story we intend to broadcast is as follows (word for word). If you or anyone out there sees something in this script that is downright wrong or even a bit iffy, please let me know. Again, I would appreciate replies from folks who actually have first hand knowledge, otherwise we are unable to use your input.

A commuter plane has crashed inthe east-central US state of Kentucky, killing 49 people on board. The flight, operated by Delta Air Line's regional carrier, COMAIR, crashed shortly after taking off from Lexington, Kentucky, for Atlanta, Geordia on Sunday morning.

An airport official confirmed that 49 of the 50 people on board, including the pilot, were killed and the surviving co-pilot is in critical condition. Local media said the plane might have taken off from the wrong runway, which was too short.

In Tokyo, Foreign Ministry officials say there were two apparently Japanese names on the passenger list.

Specifically, any comments about the runway might be helpful. I don't like the term "too short"-- ie, too short for what? Again, I did not write this script, I only produce the story (ie, edit pictures and cue the announcer, etc.)

the CRJ 200 needs approx 5000ft of runway. they had 3500 which tells me they were not in a high speed abort, right?
Not necessarily. Your facts do not support your supposition.

I'd suggest you stay away from definitive statements in these kind of discussions.

You can do a high speed abort on a runway that's too short. You're just going to run off the end and make ruts in the grass.

It's more or less been beat to death that they attempted to take off on the wrong runway. Now, we need to focus on what led up to that and why. Was fatigue a factor? Was poor airport signage a factor? Could ATC have done something? Was there a miscommunication in the flight deck? We don't have ANY of that data yet.

Lauren, this is VERY nitpicky, but here's one thing I would suggest. Instead of saying "An airport official confirmed that 49 of the 50 people on board, including the pilot, were killed and the surviving co-pilot is in critical condition" say "....incuding the captain, were killed, and the surviving first officer is in critical condition." Technically speaking, both are "pilots."

perhaps 'less than adequate length'?

I pretty much agree with that. We still don't know JACK about this accident. I am not going to speculate.
