Comair Crash today (fatal)

Wow...I'm now hearing about this in the West Coast. This does hurt.

I see the point of using the wrong runway. I'll like to see what the final investigative report says.

Neil

Edit: I just realized this is the second DL191 accident, the last one back in 1985, and the third 191 accident for any airline (American 191 out of ORD).

what if ATC made a mistake and said 26 instead of 22 when they cleared you?

It wouldn't matter.

I'm really sick of Fox and CNN's not-so-subtle innuendos as to what actually happened when they clearly have nothing to offer other than really uninformed speculation. But I guess patience, restraint, and level-headedness have never been too popular on national news networks.

Before everyone gets all worried about the wrong runway there is a 14 minute gap between the T/O clearance and the crash. Jets dont take 14 minutes to take off and travel one mile from the end of the runway.

CNN.com ...

Flight 5191 was cleared for takeoff at 6:05 a.m. ET, which was the last communication between the pilot and air traffic controllers, FAA officials said.
The plane crashed at 6:19 a.m. ET, about a mile west of the airport, FAA officials said.

I'm hoping that something went wrong and they were circling back, but I don't see how the FAA can know when the plane crashed. Maybe when it went off radar, but not when it crashed. 14 minutes is pretty long, but the EFC is normally 10 minutes. It's possible the FAA is even speculating on when the crash actually occurred. Guessing it won't be a fact until the proper data is recovered, and that will come from the NTSB, not the FAA.

Agree 100%

WLEX TV is confirming that the flight did indeed depart from the wrong runway, runway 26.

Live streaming news coverage is available on www.wlextv.com.

Hi Sweetie!

Please check out the streaming video coverage on WLEX via the link in Bill's post. It's local coverage, not the CNN/Fox News crap. They've shown video of the crash site, lots of maps of the airport and wreckage in relation to it.

WLEX's coverage has far less speculation than the national cable news outlets. They are the local NBC station.

They have an overhead shot and the crash site is in a direct line with runway 26, less than the length of the runway from the end.

WLEX reports that the distance is closer to a quarter mile from the departure end.

The helicopter shot shows it didn't get far.

Indeed sad news. I am going to reserve any comments until I find out some more "facts" from the NTSB. I cannot bring myself to believe anything that I hear from those knuckleheads on Fox or CNBC say when they dont even know the difference between a Boeing and Airbus A/C! My thoughts and prayer go out to the crew and all of the passengers!

I just woke up in HI to this...about 4-6 hours after everyone else heard about it.

This sucks....regardless of what caused it. RIP.

what a tragedy.

I thought flight number 191 was 'retired' because of the DAL and AAL incidents?

The news is saying it was 5191.

Actually it says Runway 8-26 not usable for landing or taxiing of aircraft over 12,000 lbs. gross weight so theorectically take off from that runway would be ok.

Seems odd they wouldn't include the word "takeoff" in there... Not sure how you get to the runway to be able to takeoff without taxiing onto it?

As a former Comair & Delta Air Lines employee, CVG and PBI respectively, it saddens me to hear this kind of news. My deepest sympathy to the families of the flight crewmembers and those passengers traveling on Flt 5191.

May the souls of departed rest in peace and may light perpetual shine upon them. AMEN.

Respectfully,

Totally agree. The guy on Fox News is using a model to show how much he really doesn't know. I know this is talked about after every time something happens in our industry. They throw on anybody and call them aviation experts. Some of them know a little bit, but for the most part they don't.

Just like in every accident, there are a chain of events that lead up to the accident. It is not one singular event.

It is always a sad day when we lose our colleagues. Our thoughts and prayers with all the families.

Very sorry to hear of this terrible tragedy.

I don't know if I'm suppose to post links from another site, but if it's against the policy of JC, the moderators (Doug, and anyone else) have my blessisng to take the link off.

Here is a link to photos of the aircraft taken prior to the crash (in recent years).

well.. I´ve heard that the FO was the guy who survived... so if thats true.. we will probaby will find the right casue for the crash.. If not.they can always go back to the black box and listen to the last radio converstions to see if they were aproved for rwy 22 or 26.. and What was that the pilots read back.. cleared for rwy 22 or 26....:whatever:

It sure looks like they bit off on the wrong runway during taxi out. It is a very easy runway to misalign with given the taxiway layout. From the news video...it appears that the elevated signage may not have been re-installed yet after the repaving. If that's the case...a real gotchya.
BUT...here's a question...that airport has ATC and a control tower there on the premises right? if so, wouldn't the top guys in the control tower seen that they were on the wrong runway and told them to hold vs giving them the ok to takeoff?? typically planes hold before taking off, so you'd have thought someone in ATC would have seen or noticed the error?

Yeah so stop watching it. That is what they want. Feed you anything they can to keep you tuned in.
