Well said. It's nigh impossible to deconstruct a crash from one picture. Those struts are made for tension, and not a lot of compression. They basically hold the wing up when it's not producing lift.

Also, RE the aforementioned parking lot... How many light standards are there in said parking lot? Landscaped islands with trees? I've seen plenty of parking lots that I wouldn't want to land in.

Seems to me, they made a good choice in a bad situation...
