every example you’ve given has been in the arrival phase, when do you pull out the vfr chart in the departure phase?

I’ll never forget when I was flying a king air into SNA one night heading over corona, crossing the hills to line up with the localizer, my absolutely useless wet blanket of a FO said to me “man, big bear sure looks beautiful tonight”
A few flights later I actually had leave him behind at an airport and airline home he was so useless.
Side note I use VFR charts all the time 121. It’s called being curious about • you see out the window. Not that complicated.

No one said it was. We were discussing about Mt Diablo on jepp charts to which we discovered, it wasn’t.
CC in a spiral to never admit he is wrong, brought up flying around with your VFR jepp up. lol.
Now we are so deep into the weeds he’s explaining to us how to discover a freeway using a VFR chart, to a group of very experienced pilots…

I also am so incredibly glad I got into a place with absolutely no care in the world when or where or how you call in fatigued or sick as often as you want after hearing about some of these stories. Jeeez
Once upon a time, you’d often run into pilots who forget where they came from. They’re in the big leagues now, and have ram dumped anything regarding VFR, GA, flying for fun etc.
Nowdays, more and more you find pilots that haven’t forgotten where they came from as it comes to this, because with how they came up in the career, they were never there for any appreciable amount of time in their career to begin with.
Sad to see, really.

Honestly, I’ve only driven out that far about 3 or 4 times. It was a min 10 hr day rest after a redeye, going back to LA. I was fairly certain it was 91 (as evidenced by that bottleneck of car headlights near Yorba Linda, no matter what time of day it is).
Still, I like to see the VFR chart for airports not on the and screen, and for VFR checkpoints near us. Just morbid curiosity in a non-busy moment above 10k.
May as well. There’s a lot to see out there and check out; not just things to just boringly cruise past at ole-73’s max altitude of the high 30s

172 page pdf file with interesting features, cities, mountains, rivers, lakes, general facts, etc, for all 50 states.
I read that occasionally in cruise. Always something to learn.

The whole fatigue game is a clown show and the FAA has allowed it to happen for the operators benefit. “You can’t predict fatigue.” Why not? I know that I’m delayed out of SFO, I know that I’m on a long redeye, and I now know that my workload has increased. With the increased workload, I know I won’t be fit for duty come landing time on the east coast. Simple and logical, but “yOu CaNt PrEdICt FaTiGuE.”
Everybody wants to Monday Morning Arm Chair QB this, but moral of the story, CA was in a situation he was uncomfortable with, made a decision, and got the airplane safely back on the ground.
Only critique I’d have is once that decision is made, stop asking for permission and start telling. If the dispatcher, MX controller, or duty pilot has a problem with it…let DALPA deal with it. I’m sure they’d love to flex on some management over the erosion of PIC authority.

Yes, we know it’s on the VFR charts… no one said it wasn’t? …that was my point…we were never even talking about VFR charts in the first place. We brought up Jepp plates and charts then when everyone said it wasn’t on them, we brought up VFR charts. Hope the 3rd explanation makes sense to you.

Most companies encourage their Captains to use all resources when making a decision.
How many times have you all (as Captains) have heard something to the effect of "You are not operating in a silo. Reach out to your resources if you have any issues to help you best resolve your issues"?
So we've be preaching CRM all these years and now that we are actually using CRM, we are fussing.. "be a Captain and make a decision...".

Yeah definitely. I mean I don’t keep my GA skills up at all really. But I’ve never really been into flying GA. To each their own. Funnily enough I keep my CFI current still but I’d need hours with a CFI to feel comfortable flying a GA airplane again.

I just assume anything interesting I say on VHF will make its way to AvGeek/foamer (to use the railfan term) YouTube. Someone else is always listening on VHF. I enjoy cranking the smart ass up a notch in New York but to the extent possible I don’t want to have a talk with the duty pilot on VHF.
But.
My point with that line is I (freshly current and qualified, even) fished out my QRH and looked at the procedure they were actually running. The fact that neither a maintenance controller nor a flight superintendent (nor a duty pilot?) appreciated the operational import of the last line of the QRH procedure actually referenced by the video is, in the words of the FIA, “noted.”
