Layover food

SJC on night two of my 4 day. I took two of the FAs out for drinks at Paper Plane. Really nice bar that’s not too outrageously priced and my favorite taco truck, Las Delicias De Toñita Taco Truck. Next to Original Joes. Bomb tacos.

Day 4 of my 6 days on reserve isn’t too bad.

Depends on how long you have to wander around. Train system is pretty straight forward. Google Maps transit works really well.

Stay in the city option....

-Go see the imperial palace in Chiyoda City.
-Go up to the observation deck at Skytree.
-Go see the crazy crosswalk at Shibuya (used to be able to get something at Starbucks and watch the madness from the second floor seating area... not sure if it's still open.)
-Twofer... quiet of Yoyogi Park + craziness of Harajuku.

If you've got 2/3rd or more of a day....

-Go to Mt Takao. Station name is Takaosanguchi. Take the chairlift or inclined train halfway up and then walk 45 minutes to the top. Great views of Fiju San on clear days.

-Take the train to Kawagoe and wander around. There is an amazing railroad museum up there that I've always wanted to go to.

If you've got a full day...

-take the trains to Hakone.
-take the ferry from Yokosuka to Hama-kanya and walk up Mount Nokogiri. I've really wanted to to this is but it's an all day thing. I bid a 48 hour layover a year ago just so I could do it but then we had cabin fumes on climb out so we had to turn around and go home.

Have fun whatever you do.

I'll emphasize that Google Maps makes navigating the trains in Tokyo/Japan SUPER easy. Its (not surprisingly) precise - down to exactly which platform to board from, which was helpful in some of the more sprawling stations. We used the Suica app for touch on/touch off payment when we were there earlier in the year on vacation.
 
Alright, it's my first time doing the BWI layover since we moved it to Annapolis and I have to add one more spot to my list of "Luke's recommended Italian restaurants around the US".

Osteria 177 in Annapolis. Probably one of the best Italian restaurants I've been to in recent years. The chef is from Italy and the menu has a lot of interesting things that are hard to find in the US. Execution wise you could close your eyes and think you were overseas. It's a bit pricey so not quite a first year pay kind of thing (unless the Captain is buying) but totally worth it.

I had the grilled calamari

Both were excellent. Wish I'd saved room for dessert.

Wait a second, do you work for the same virtual airline a bunch of us fly for? Or did others coincidentally move their BWI layover hotel to Annapolis as well?

Mine is the one that likes wearing hats and flying 757s to Florida. We moved it to Annapolis about a year ago. I'm not surprised other airlines are doing it to, it's such a pretty town. The only downside is the van ride is kind of long for those 5am reports but I'll take it for good crab cakes and Italian food
