In-house Delta Job Fair, October 20/21 2017

That's cool.

But if you want the job, you have to play the game.

When I applied for the Naval Academy in high school, I thought it was preposterous that I was deemed a "less than competitive" applicant because I didn't have a "varsity sport", had a high GPA in advanced studies with AP Calculus, AP Physics and AP English.

But if I wanted to get into the Naval Academy, I had to set some time out of my studies and be a badass Badminton player because I didn't have a chance in the world at Football or Baseball because I wasn't sports-oriented.

It was part of the game that I would have to play if I wanted to reach that goal and I decided it wasn't worth it and never really mentioned this in the last 29 years.

Why did the Naval Academy require varsity sports? I literally had no idea, but they did and I'm sure they had their reasons. The Coast Guard Academy and the Merchant Marine Academy (as far as I remember) didn't, but those were two organizations I didn't have any interest in and felt like a consolation.

On second thought, I probably should have told my story about getting a CFI and my disdain of Lazy-8s which literally made no friggen sense to me why I had to master teaching those when I'd literally never do them in the real world.
You mean like the people who complain about the degree requirement because it has "nothing to do with being a good pilot." Just get the damn degree! Appease the gods and play monkey!

I'm sure the powers that be have seen your grievance and are working swiftly to address your concerns. :)

Having flown with the degreed and the not, I'll respectfully but firmly beg to differ.

Yeah I have to sit and wait for the airing of grievances to finish. Im patient though.

Let's not get too nuanced here. From a regional perspective, a job at the mainline is a huge step up, regardless of aircraft size.
You almost have to be nuanced. We regional pilots are a prickly lot. Sometimes rightfully so! Most of the time not, though.

Well, cutting off ones's nose to spite their face is an age old human tradition. Far be it for me to interfere.

Hoping to get a spot... Does it actually do anything for me that a nicely worded internal email to pilot selection doesn't do? Ie, bad elevator pitch = get scored, same net result as internal, good elevator pitch = get scored but maybe get put into a stack of follow up?
And then I suppose the follow up question is what makes a good elevator pitch...

What do you want to convey in 30 seconds that gives a positive impression of yourself.

Yes.

The "elevator pitch" isn't specifically a career fair skill, but a networking skill.

Be able to introduce yourself, tell a person who you are, what you're after and make it actionable. SOOOOOO many people run into someone that could help them and literally treat it like Pokémon.

"HI I'm Frank, can I have a business card?" And then 12 hours later you get a random email from a person you don't remember with a LOR request from airline apps

And parents wonder why I won't let my kids have texting. We are breeding inability to have meaningful conversations.
