Well, here's a thought: If you can't be respectful of others, or you think showing respect is somehow not being,'honest', then take it to PM and leave everyone else out of it. Some of this really is getting ridiculous.

Just a thought. Now, where do I go to get 1¢ change from my 2¢ worth?

Here's the thing. To "them" it isn't about showing or not showing respect to others, they truly believe their station in life and this profession elevates them above all others. "They" believe respect and unquestioning loyalty to their insight is due them simply because of who they are. The inability to respect anyone else is completely foreign.

Duug I don't have anything to advertise with a banner ad (I dunno, maybe question to sexual habits of a couple of specific users or something). How much would it cost to be a moderator for three months?

I would pay goode moneys, not to be the nuclear option, but to be the Random Element. A couple of users getting a little inflated on the forum … maybe they'll be visited by Random, or maybe they'll move-on, unscathed. Maybe Random decides that everyone who posted on an odd-numbered page or a thread gets catte avatars. Maybe Random decides some users get access to the super-seekrit Inner Circle subforum.

But it's only mostly random; the odds are better of avoiding Random chance if you keep a low, cordial profile. Not zero, but lower.

This I would pay good money for.

I used to come in here and at least lurk regularly. It's been several years but a member here gave me a lead which resulted in my first aviation job as a flight instructor. I tried to pay it forward and provide useful info for those trying to get on with whoever I was working for at the time, and I made a few friends out of it.

I'll be honest though I haven't spent much time on this site for the past year or so. It seemed every other thread turned into either a left versus right political argument or an excessive amount of negativity and bitter criticism of everything under the sun, and I just can't have that in my life.

i guess i just dont get if Papa Derg says cut it out on his site, why would you continue? grow a brian.

Hey idiot, it's spelled "brain." Or are just some low-life PFTing scumbag that never went to elementary school? Dumbass.

I guess throwing insults does bring more attention to my side of the argument, and maybe I will win him over by showing my gigantic internetz balls!

the thing is, I truly don't want anyone to leave...I don't. I appreciate all the knowledge and wisdom of those who share it here.

This thread is and example of what we need when someone, this year it's ATN, other years it's been others, to see that we as a community don't stand for abusive behaviors. Whether it be overly sexual, racist, misogynistic or just plain mean.

Doug wants the community to police itself, and then, when that doesn't work it should go to the moderation team. The problem is that it's entertaining to be outside the bounds...it's fun in a Kardashian train wreck sort of way, to watch people acting out on the internet and those people get a following that enjoys that brand of entertainment.

The problem is, we are not about popularity, nor are we about ratings...we are about accessibility, and when so many meaningful discussions degrade into one, where if you don't agree with my position, "you're a scumbag" or "you're a union goon" it can turn off most people who want to learn and take them right out of the conversation.

I don't enjoy what happened yesterday...not at all. I hope that when people are being abusive in the future, we can see this kind of COMMUNITY response...because, whether ATN stays or goes, and that's not up to me, there will be another who comes along that enjoys stirring the pot, and that takes all the fun out for those of us who want to have a great experience here.

I understand the pressing need to educate people about topics you feel strongly about, but please realize that at some point you may become the creepy " The End is Nigh!!" guy unless you can keep it civil.

Personal attacks, if you feel the need for them, can be PM'd to their target. Publicizing an argument that descends into personal issues is simply attention-wh*ring, in my book.

Don't ruin it for the rest of us, please.

Let's say that it's ok to be so passionate about serious challenges that face the american airline industry...so much so that it would be acceptable to insult people for not agreeing with you. (and we don't agree to that here)

What is the reasoning for insulting everyone who doesn't agree about tipping a maid?

We disagree, simple as that. I have to get off the office, so I leave you all to continue patting each other on the back about how "nice" you are to each other while Rome burns around you. Have fun.
There's a difference between being nice, and being civil. Nobody is being nice to you in this thread, but we are all being civil. That's the expectation here, and just like we do at work, we police our own (which is what we're doing now).

Being civil, and treating others with respect, will bring people to your side of the argument far easier than berating or condescending to them. At the end of the day, if you still feel you're special enough that the rules of professional decorum don't apply to you, just know that you're sorely mistaken.

Everyone wants to know why I'm laughing my ass off.

How can you respect someone and their viewpoint that would lead to the decimation of your career? Respect is earned, not given.

Also, 'policing your own' can lead to a lynch mob when there is a minority viewpoint.
