A Message From Your MEC Chairman
January 16, 2014
Fellow pilots:
This week’s JCBA ballot results showed a great deal of pilot engagement with 91% participation. It was excellent to see so many of you take the time to get informed, vote, and participate in the process of obtaining a new JCBA. The percentage of votes against the agreement also demonstrated that the democratic process works. It sent a strong message that the pilots want something different from the Company than what was presented. Over the next few weeks we will begin polling pilots in an effort to move forward. The pilots of ExpressJet, both legacy ASA and XJT, are an important partner in building a successful operation.
To that end, we remain fully engaged in representing your interests. While the JCBA was being negotiated over the past 3 years and as work continues on it, dozens of other dedicated committee volunteers have continued to take excellent care of our pilots:
· With medical issues
· Who experience a critical incident
· Who have contractual or pay issues
· Who have substance abuse problems
· On overnights by ensuring safe, quality hotel accommodations
· Having jumpseat issues while trying to commute to or from work
· Having issues going out on, or returning from, a leave of absence
· Needing local representation for disciplinary issues
· By advocating for issues important to our pilots’ careers on Capitol Hill
· By mentoring our new hire first officers and newly upgraded captains
· By helping resolve conflicts without involving the chief pilot’s office
· By assisting them with retirement and insurance concerns
· By ensuring the safety of our airline system through FOQA, ASAP, and several other critical safety programs
· By building the best possible schedules for our pilots given the nearly unworkable solutions presented
· Be ensuring our pilots are safe on overnights, particularly in dangerous parts of the world
· By assisting and progressing pilots experiencing training issues
There is a lot more to our Association than contract negotiations, and the list above is not all-inclusive. Thanks to our many dedicated volunteers, and despite not having the same level of financial resources as a mainline carrier, our pilots are taken care of as well as, if not better than, any other pilot group out there. That’s a true testament to the people within our volunteer structure. Rest assured that if you need assistance, your ALPA reps and committee volunteers will be standing by.
There are a lot of challenges ahead, but with a unified pilot group, we have the best opportunity for reaching a new tentative agreement and working for a company where we can all be proud. Know that we fully plan to take action, and your continued active participation as a union member is appreciated.
In unity,
Chris Grable
MEC Chairman
