United Express jet off San Antonio runway

11:52 PM CDT on Sunday, September 7, 2008
Associated Press

SAN ANTONIO - A United Express jet ran off a runway at San Antonio International Airport after landing on a flight from Los Angeles.

United Airlines spokeswoman Megan McCarthy said none of the 52 passengers and four crew members on the flight were injured. They were bused to the terminal.

McCarthy told The Associated Press that United would work with SkyWest Airlines, the operator of the regional jet, to try to determine what caused the jet to leave the runway.

San Antonio airport spokesman David Hebert said in a story on the San Antonio Express-News Web site that the plane appeared to be having some mechanical difficulties.

The accident closed the primary runway at the airport for about two hours. The other runway was already closed for construction.

Do you know what kind of plane was it that crashed? I have family that fly for skywest. Sucks that it completely closed down San Antonio airport.

52 pax for United, had to have been a CRJ-700. And it didn't crash, it just ran off the runway.

Well, it says "regional jet" so I think it might have been a CRJ. :D LOL Sorry, that was just too hard to resist. And in all seriousness, I hope your family was not involved.

Isn't the definition of an airplane crash "anytime you leave the runway unvolunarily during take off or landing, have to fill out report and/or have the NTSB look into the situation"?

I think "crash" is the wong terminology all together. I think what it comes down to is the difference in definition of "incident" or "accident".

:yup: Well I am just a noob and most noobs don't know that regional jet would be a CRJ. Would a Brasila count as a regional jet? I joined this forum for the ATC and realized that I could learn more about flying. (Good thing to know some stuff when your husband's entire family flies, it helps you to actually understand some of the conversations). Most the stuff I know is from LOTS of listening to many conversations about airplanes, asking lots of "stupid" questions on here and in conversations and helping my husband study for checkrides and such. I find it all very interesting and if I didn't get so motion sick in little planes I probably would go for my private. Since I do get motion sickness, I KNOW I wouldn't make it through the unusual attitudes part.

As for the family, I don't think the family member that flies for skywest flies the CRJ's anymore. I believe he moved to Brasilas.

Well if you are going to get technical with the pilot terminology :sarcasm:

Actually, my husband always corrects me on that too. Some people just never learn, no matter how good the teacher! :D

Sorry teetee, didn't mean any offense,

Anyways, no a brasillia is a turbo-prop, not a jet. And the only regional jets that we fly are CRJs, but we do operate 3 different models.

And unless I'm mistaken, since there were no injuries and no damage to property (at least not that I gathered from the article) this would be classified as an incident rather than an accident.

I really wasn't offended at all. I guess I needed to put more :sarcasm: in. I honestly am just trying to learn all this terminology. Before when airplane was mentioned at the in-laws, my eyes glazed over. Now I listen and I really want to learn more about all the different aspects. My husband is in a "aircraft recognition" course this semester and I am excited to study with him and learn more about the different planes and what each means.

As for the incident, one day I might stop labeling all bad landings as crashes :)

Nick am I missing something? Looks like the weather was fine. Not sure I see what you are getting at with the METARs.

That is what I was getting at.

Weather apparently was not a problem.

As opposed to a microburst at the end of a wet runway.

Re: D'oh

I thought it was helpful. My first thought was "Was it weather related?"

Well see, now every pilot at one point or another has a landing that can properly be classified as a "crash". At least if the Flight Attendants have anything to say about it. :D They can be MEAN when they tease us about them. :)

I have a few landings in small planes that I swear we jumped down the runway not land and I have teased about the crashing on those as well.

The worst landing I have ever experienced was on a Jetblue flight from CA to UT. The weather was just really bad that night and the entire flight was bumpy. I was pregnant and even the FA's were afraid I was going to puke. The FO apologized to me as I was walking off cause the FA's gave him such a hard time.

Ok fine it was me! I thought I'd take up the rj for a few hours, I didn't mean no harm. After all, I never had problems landing the 700 on microsoft flyt sim!:D

A Brasilia is a turboprop . . . a regional jet could be the CRJ (Canadair Regional Jet)or an ERJ (Embrear Regional Jet)

Your family member likely was an FO on the jet and upgraded to CA on the Bro (Brasilia) where's he based?
