What is with all the doom and gloom

Call me short-sighted, but why exactly?

It is illegal for a company to unilaterally change the terms of a CBA, even if the change could be considered positive. They can't just raise a pay rate without negotiating for it. By doing this, they're effectively getting what they want (attracting newhires) without addressing any of the labor group's issues. Not acceptable. Pinnacle tried to do this with bonuses instead of pay rates, and ALPA put a stop to it. I'm glad that the IBT is doing the same at Republic. You can't let these people get away with unilateral changes. Bad juju.

This is a historic event. This signals the beginning of the end of extremely low 1st year pay. All other airlines will eventually match. The floodgates are about to open. Our time has come.

I wouldn't start opening any champagne bottles just yet, but I do hope it is a sign of things in the future.

There's going to be hiring at mainline, I don't think anyone doubts that.

Some people will throw their hands up in the air and proclaim that the pilot shortage will never come, leave the industry and then come screaming back when mainline starts hiring, only to find out they're too far behind the eight ball to move up.

If you want to move on, you'll move on if you're prepared, connected and qualified. Get the type and number of hours you need for the type of operation you want to work for. Network with people that can help you meet your goals. Get the other qualifications beyond hours and type ratings that airlines require such as degrees.

If you do these things, and if you're not a tool box, you'll go places.

If not, well, enjoy working at a regional for the rest of your life.

I've always been an advocate of the coming pilot shortage, although most people around here laugh at the idea. But, I've never said that this was the year. I don't think anyone has. The age 65 retirements don't even start until the very end of December this year. That is what will drive the pilot shortage for the most part, so next year is the year that it will likely start. It gets progressively worse over the next decade, with retirements at Delta, UAL, and American reaching about 800/yr during the decade. Do the math. There aren't enough regional pilots at all of the regionals combined to fill the coming vacancies. The shortage is coming. It just isn't quite here yet. Patience is a virtue. ;)
I hope your right. I'm still working my desk job but I have all the ratings just waiting for the right time to make the jump

+1 to the esteemed Mr. Train.

The biggest thing in this business is simply continuing to show up. The networking and hours take care of themselves. Unless you're a total luckbox and have impeccable timing, you'll probably take some pain in the process. However, sticking with it is what will get you to where you want to be. :)

Don't wait until the hiring wave has already started. Then you'll just be the guy hired at the end of the wave awaiting an inevitable furlough when the industry takes its next downturn. You want to be ready when it starts. I would recommend jumping back into the business at some point this year so you've got your hours and are ready when the majors start calling and the floodgates open in the next few years.

I seem to have a horse-shoe strategically placed in my posterior.

I'm loving life right now after a recent change in job. QOL is at an all time high, the lady friend seems to like me for some strange reason, and I can drink beer without having to wait 2 weeks.

Exactly. Its an encouraging sign when Republic raises 1st year pay to an all time regional high when the floodgates aren't even going to creep open until December.

I'm sorry, but $27,000/year starting pay is a historic, celebrated event?
Compared to 18,900 first year I would say the extra 8,100 would buy me a lot more beer to mark this a "historic, celebrated event." But if you don't like to party go back and take a nap in your 75/76. :smoke:

(sigh) This side of the "get out of my seat old man!" stinks.
Huh?! No no no... I bear no ill will toward him or any other aviator further along in their career! Quite the opposite in fact. If it came across that way I sincerely apologize. I was attempting to use his quote to my advantage only in jest... and nothing more. I merely want to point out that although it may not truly be a historic occasion the increase in first year pay does indeed dramatically increase a persons purchasing ability, whether it be food, clothing, and um beer, and that as I believe the saying goes "don't look a gift horse in the mouth."

Yeah we can talk about how everything is just coming up roses when pay rates are commensurate with what they were in the 70s (Even I'm not ambitious enough to hope for the 60s). Till then, no, I'm not going to get excited about a few more crumbs being swept off the feast table. *shrug*. I think you're setting your sights a little low.

For you, we're all serfs and should join in armed revolution.

For the rest of us, we've got to live in this world, and most of us consider a 1/3 increase if pay without negotiating to be a step in the right direction.
