What aviation watch would you pick if money wasn't a issue

Re: What aviation watch would you pick if money wasn't a iss

I have one, every two year you have to pay a fortune to get new batteries in it and get the whole thing checked. 121.5 is not used anymore and Breitling does not have any plan to upgrade mine....

where I live I can`t wear it (Brazil)....

So its nothing more than an expensive watch then?

Re: What aviation watch would you pick if money wasn't a iss

I would stay away from Hamilton, a friend of mine works where they make them (they actually just put them together from parts coming from the far east). I bought a couple from him with a 40% discount for friends, all of them had problems, and they told me they get lots sent back to the factory...

Right on, I wasted my money.....aviation watches are stupid, they call them "aviation" to get the price up, don`t get me wrong Breitlings are made really nice and you will never have any sort of problem...

I like watches, and I even have an other aviation watch, I bought it while in the military and it actually looks pretty modest http://www.revue-thommen.ch/classics_quartz_chronograph.htm

Personally for flying I like to have a watch with a needle for the seconds rather then digits...

For $6,000, I'll give you my phone number and you call me and I'll lovingly tell you what time it is in 5 different time zones.

Re: What aviation watch would you pick if money wasn't a iss

Never saw the point in spending more than around 500 bucks on a watch. I picked up a Citizen Nighthawk for around 250, has an E6-B built in and everything. So far so good.

I never saw the point of the Navihawk. So much crap on there that you don't use, and with markings so small you couldn't use them in flight even if you wanted to.

If someone wants to go inexpensive, then you can't beat a G-Shock.

Re: What aviation watch would you pick if money wasn't a iss

Timex Expedition has worked well for me. $39 I think.

Watch size is inversely proportional to penis size I think. It seems remarkably indulgent to spend that much on a watch. If I were going to buy a high-end watch I would buy an Omega someday - but that will never happen. There is a watch that costs something like $500k that is like a Grandfather clock and plays Westminster Chimes in the hour - anything less than that is simply being a pretender, so you may as well go with a Timex.

Don't you guys have clocks in your airplanes? Why the need for a big fancy pilot watch? :)

If it was a gift and cost me zero does that make my penis size zero or infinity? Been a while since I took math class.

Well, the gift left your penis of appropriate size.

Your obvious tenderness to his post tends to lower your.. Erdös-girth numbers.. ;)

For my money, $50 Timex and $5950 worth of acro time, or a year's worth of trackdays and tires. YMMV

Casio G-Shock..

That was what the gubmint issued us during navigator training. The countdown timer was useful in celnav iirc.
For the OP I have a thing for Breitling, and would get the coolest one and wear it with rayban aviators to nearly all occasions no matter toolish I looked. But I think if I bought it, it would be a major letdown so I will stick with cheapo and just keep dreaming.

To pick up chicks, duh!

All kidding aside, I have a Breitling Emergency, Citizen Skyhawk and a G-Shock. The Citizen is great for it's E6-B function. Some of the planes I fly don't have clocks, or ELT's for that matter so a time piece AND a potential life saver is not a bad idea. Down here, all the water and swamp, I'll take all the help I can get.

The cost of a Breitling isn't cheap, but neither is the slim chance of needing an ELT too. If it's in your budget, then get it. Or if it is, get something less expensive and spend the balance on aerobatic/ spin recovery/ unusual attitude training. Either one can save your life one day.

Steve Fossett was wearing an Emergency.....

121.5 is not used

Last time I checked, that was still the VHF emergency freq. Just because the SARSAT won't be tripping off when a beacon comes up on that freq doesn't mean it's suddenly useless as a SAR rescue aid.

Re: What aviation watch would you pick if money wasn't a iss

I'm surprised nobody here is splif-starring the finest aviation timepiece yet conceived, the Rolex GMT Master. It provides stylish, rugged functionality without all the bells and whistles of the digital feature bloated chunks of plastic.

No way Rolex??? we don`t really buy them in Switzerland we just use them to fool rich foreigns telling them they are masterpieces...you can get the same quality with other brands for 1/5 of the price they sell them. it`s really just a name.

Peoples that really buy expensive and fine watches don`t even consider Rolex in the list: Frank Muller, GP, Patek Philippe....

Btw wrist watches were actually invented for woman jewelery but at the beginning of the last century a Brazilian aviation pioneer: Alberto Santos Dumont started using them for flying, he draw the first pilot watch and Cartier made it for him.....they have the original watch and the drawings at the local aviation museum here in Rio

well then they should give a discount on it....
