US Navy ship shoots down first aircraft since it shot down an airliner

You have a really bad memory or just pay 0 attention to what’s going on around you. Generally, when one starts lobbing missiles at various nations cargo and military vessels one should expect a response.

Israel security and strategic shipping channel.

Sounds to me like a “they” problem, not ours. See how you said various nations cargo ships? Maybe those nations should go ahead and carry out a military campaign against Yemeni rebels.

As far as shoot-downs go, our own fighter jet and an Iran Air A300. Not a good look!

Actions have consequences, crap like that is why you have Pan Am 103.

Still the greatest example of “nobody really cares about helicopters.”
That, and learning how to VID, when air to air is all you do in life. Regardless of any EID. And, not being so quick to shoot what are at the moment, non-hostiles.

One wonders how many of those ships are US flagged. Probably approximately zero. Seems like the nations whose flags the ships carry ought to bear the primary responsibility.

Indeed, and military vessels which the Houthis have also attacked, including US naval vessels.

No need to wonder it’s all right there in the link. Quite a bit more than 0 US flagged vessels.

Weird, I don’t see Liberia and the Marshall Islands taking point in these operations.
I think what’s happened to the once-proud American Merchant Marine is pretty deplorable, and it keeps me up at night for a few reasons, from national security to “this would be what airline management would absolutely cream their pants over if they could do it.”

Meh. I’d be more worried about what Airbus is trying to do with single pilot ops. And no pilot ops.

If you don't know about flags of convenience, have I got stories for you!
That’s the point I was making. Flagging your ship in a place that for all intents and purposes doesn’t have military, and then expecting us to protect them anyway, is yet another way corporations • us over.

We’ve been protecting the sea lanes as part of greater world wide globalism for almost 80 years.

You gonna get mad the French and Brits don’t have more destroyers down there helping out? You’re starting to sound like Trump.

I do. I have to hold my nose sometimes when I do, knowing where some of it goes, but the reality is that it’s pay for access.

Wouldn’t it be neat to get money out of politics?

Flag of convenience was beaten back once or twice before, but those who are going to put profit over safety and good American aviation jobs will be back to try again every so often.
