UPS Asst Dispatcher position

Haha. Not as fun as ops calling wondering why airplane x is sitting on the ramp and where the heck is airplane y?

"Muppet 1234, please verify your tail number"...

The details are really of no consequence, but there is a hypothetical lesson to be learned from it all.

If, hypothetically, you planned a 767 across an ocean, and it was planned empty with zero payload, and a flight number to reflect a ferry leg with zero payload, and the fuel load to reflect zero payload, but ops loaded 50k of freight and doesn't notify you, and the crew signs a W&B for a 50k payload, and also signs a flight release for a zero payload with the fuel to reflect a zero payload and doesn't tell you there is 50k payload until about an hour after departure....you would hypothetically not have enough fuel to meet the ETOPS requirement and would have to hypothetically turn it back. Now, hypothetically, if a crew did the same thing the day before but didn't bother to tell you and just continued across the ocean instead without the required ETOPS fuel, hypothetically.....

What happened is a good learning point for all. Whatever happened....hypothetically, I hope they don't try to bury it and instead look to fix what's wrong with the system. Giving a crew a release that says no payload and with a ferry flight call sign and then adding freight is a bad deal. I've had this happen in the past and a new release is generated with new fuel required numbers and a non-ferry flight number.

If your hypothesis is correct, the best way for the crew to catch the error would be the weight and balance that showed payload vs being empty. Also, possibly catch that the projected TO weight on the release differed from the actual takeoff weight by 50K lbs.

What gets me is they throw and IRO on a 76 and think that makes a 15 hour duty day safe. No bunks and no ability to get any rest. The way I added the numbers on the duty day it wouldn't have been contractual for a line crew. Instead, they give it to management pilots who work in the sims all year and do little flying outside of peak. Those guys are under great pressure to "get the job done no matter what". I sorta feel bad for them (just this once).

Hypothetically speaking, I have a huge problem with this response. There are procedures in place for load planning, flight control and the flight crews already. Because a couple some ones screwed up trying to do a rush job doesn't mean we need to change the procedure. They f'ed up... they didn't follow the rules. What makes anyone think that adding any new layer of rules will make them not skip over that just to get the on time. It seems we've gotten to the point (i'm talking industry and FAA) that "some one screwed up... let's just correct that person" to let's change everything for everybody because some body was a dumbass for a minute... Remember the words of Ron White; "You can't fix stupid"

IN this alleged hypothetical, you have training pilots blowing the procedure that is an every flight thing. WTF? Why are they training?? If the hypothetical management crew doesn't have enough line flying experience to perform basic procedures, probably shouldn't be flying the line. Stick to sim instructing only...

*steps off soapbox*

Good luck to everyone applying for the UPS jobs!!! I would offer advice on how to get on there, but I'm not sure doing the phone interview fall down drunk is the best way to go about it these days.... it did work for me though so you could give it a try.

I must also chime in and not recommend failing a sobriety test, hypothetically, at 0430, get let go by an apparently desperate and hopelessly single female cop, and get the UPS interview call at 0800, hypothetically. Don't do that. It worked...somehow hypothetically...but don't. Save your luck for something else.

What is the process for being hired? Do you go in for a test first like SWA, or is the phone interview first? Any idea on the class size or date for this hiring round? Any consideration given for former UPS employees who did load planning? (and have positive rehire status). Thanks in advance.

Looks like the position announcement has already closed. Only open for three days. I wonder how many applications they received.

1) Senseless random electronic sorting process mandated by HR that your resume has to somehow make it through.

2) Phone interview.

3) Personal interview with a written test and a verbal battery of questions designed to break even the toughest on the roster at Gitmo.

Four is the target for hiring this round with no established class date, but expected to have at least three of the four classed up and checked out on the schedule as dispatchers by late spring or early summer. Former employees have always been considered a priority assuming they are on a rehire status and as long as they meet the experience requirements. We have several amongst our ranks and most were load planners in the past. The announcement was unintended and premature and that's why we were all surprised. However, it will be brought back up soon and all who have applied should reapply...unless you have continuously embarrassed yourself on this site by being a complete narcissistic d-bag that not a single person would ever want to work with.

Thanks for the info.

So, you are saying a UPS management crew, current and qualified by the FAA to fly this trip, is (was) stupid? You don't seem to understand that UPS is never wrong. What's the matter with you?

Fortunately, I haven't encountered many of those on this site...although there have been one or two, I admit. Good luck to all who apply!

I dont think I ve been on here long enough to qualify as a "d-bag".
And I have never had narcolepsy before either! so,. Im good to go....

I think only the "lucky ones" get the TBNT. The rest of us get a complimentary whiff of the smoke from the ashes that used to be our ...resume. :stir:Kaboom. Tastes like chicken.

So, no, I have not gotten a TBNT notice.
