The Pilot Shortage -Managements Fault?

In almost every case I can think of when you move to a different industry you take a pay cut.

My experience was different, my salary took a bump by switching from a low level management position with a regional for an entry level position with a healthcare company. Salaries are sub par even within management in the airline sector when compared to other industries, so it's not hard to see why top talent will always look elsewhere before considering a career with the airlines.

Err...

Do them anyway. I did. I do.

I think you have me entirely confused with someone else!

I am not a runner. I'm a hockey player. The concept of running a marathon sounds awful to me, and offers no reward.

These goals sound extremely obligatory. My natural inclination is to say "... and then what?" So you've visited all the US states and territories... that and $5 will get you a beer. Starting a charity is fine, if that's your calling, but it's not mine. I started learning Russian (and Irish, and Polish, and German), but determined that I'm an English specialist... and without conversation partners, other languages would never stick.

Hi! I'm a fox. Have we met?

I am, in no particular order, a (long-since retired) professional swordfighter, a judoka, an ice hockey player, ice hockey official, musician, composer, author, swamp rat, shooter, a former civil-war re-enactor, sailor, motorcyclist, skier, unix god, programmer, diver, car enjoyment specialist, a climber, someone who loves flying aerobatics, a flight instructor, a professional pilot. I dabble in art, photography, philosophy, philology, phylogeny, enjoy literature, and absolutely adore learning. I'm a furry, a fursuiter, a camper, a lover of traditional Irish music, a flutist, a pennywhistler, a guitarist, a bassist, a synthesist, a recording engineer. I roast my own coffee, and I'm an espresso specialist (though my latte art still sucks, for some reason), but these days my main focus is on single-origin pour-over of various sorts. I ride mountain bikes, I've crewed civil war artillery, I'm a WWII nut, especially when it comes to the naval, aviation, or naviation fronts. I've raced sailboats, visited nearly every corner of the US (but none of the middle!), built ISPs and global-scale compute cloud platforms, and in short have had a whale of a time with my life so far. If I died tomorrow, I would die pretty darn happy. (Except for not finishing the series I'm writing!)

Anyway, it's good that you're open to the world outside of employment. It's excellent. Many people are far too beaten-down by society, trapped in a myopia of misery, and I am always pleased by counterexamples. Now, open your mind a little wider, and realize that even employment can provide more reward than just money. (And if it doesn't, you should do something else!)

Do what you love, and make them pay you for it.

Wait wait wait...did you just say you're a furry?

That and the wings and empennage.
What's wrong with the wing and empennage? I like the T-tail from an aesthetic standpoint, but I always thought the 90 was a wonderful handling airplane. Painfully slow (engine's fault), maintenance intensive and comparatively expensive to operate (from a Japanese standpoint anyway) but nice to fly. The 200 and F90 were on my short list but they didn't represent good value for money.

Excuse me???
Am I misunderstanding here? Is a furry not someone who dresses up as an animal and then sexes like minded people dressed up as animals? Because that's what "furry" means in Germany (or at least the Berlin "scene")

Not trying to offend, might just be a language difference.

Ugh... No, that's not what "furry" means. Furry is a community, and an identity, not a fetish. It's commonly treated as a fetish by the ignorant, which is likely where you've come across it, but it's not a fetish anymore than, say, an airline job is a fetish.

Ok. My apologies for the misunderstanding

I just ran into a guy who recently moved on to UAL after being at a regional for a good long time. He's a relief officer on the 757/767, which means he does very little flying. He said there's still BS, but it's a different kind of BS. But on the whole, he said his life was much better and the pay helps to cover some of the BS.

It made me update some of my resumes that night, even though my plan is still to stay and upgrade at the regional. Not that I'm really expecting any calls, but you never know.

Flying an airplane for a living is all I've ever wanted to do. I've done some other jobs outside aviation, but I've always wanted a career in flying. The problem is that the money isn't really there at the regional level until you've got some years in or are captain or both. I'm also luck enough that my wife makes a decent living, has excellent benefits and we live in a cheap part of the world. She's also been understanding of my passion for flying since day one. Take out any of those factors and it would make it very hard to keep doing this for the (relative) lack in pay for the commitment involved. Especially with kids.

I'm fine with being a wage slave. It's my blue collar nature and my laziness combined. Closest I ever got to working for myself was as an independent contractor for a courier company. Making my own schedule was great, it allowed me to take off time to get my CFII. But the money wasn't there and it was a lot of long days worrying about making money. Some people are cut out for it, I'm not one of them.

Lottery money? I'd probably keep flying somehow and find some way to enjoy my money, time and family.
