You're right, I did see that. I guess my question should have been, "in an interview for an airline job post Mokulele, will they agree that that SIC Caravan time is valued to count toward the time they are looking for?"

"Just a few short months ago, I was emailing him (his father) about how I’d decided I really wanted to be a pilot. From the time I was a little kid, flying and airplanes had been a passion for me. That passion died out for a few years up until about last November (2012). Since then, I’ve accomplished so much with his help including my first solo flight (before I could drive!), my first cross country, and later this week, my first solo cross-country.”

How dare he have worked so hard to attain his goal. How dare he still find the joy, enthusiasm and adventure in flying. How dare he want to share his journey in order to inspire others. How dare he at such a young age learn the importance of paying it forward and helping others to attain their dream.

Whatever happen to the guy who once posted this:

Flying Hawaii is great. Second greatest epic flying i did was there. First was an unbelievable golden light sunset over lake Okeechobee popping out of some CB clouds.
Vids are great, blog is meh, glad kid's enjoying what he's doing
 
I've really enjoyed Swayne's videos and am an admirer of how he's been an ambassador of the industry. I think he's a young man with a genuinely good work ethic and someone that I think and hope will do well in this profession.

HOWEVER . . . I'm at a huge disconnect with the premise that we're being asked to crowdfund someone's job at Mokulele. I'm happy for the applicant, but I think the fact that the job pays so poorly that it's necessary to establish a Go Fund Me site just to get her to that job is pretty despicable.

Most of us have made tremendous sacrifices to get to wherever we've landed in this industry. And I have nothing but gratitude for all of the people that helped me along the way. I know that my good fortune in this industry has been equal parts hard work, good luck, and the generous and selfless help of others.

Having said that, there is very little that I wouldn't do to help an aspiring pilot achieve their goal. However, the concept of this Go Fund Me campaign is the antithesis of what we should be doing as stewards of this great profession. Why should we be asked to fund the staffing requirements of a for-profit airline? If they need pilots, they should pay a livable wage to recruit and retain those pilots.

While I'm sure Swayne's intentions are earnest and well-intentioned, this is an idea that is absurd.

Maybe Swayne can correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure they can log it as total time so what he's doing isn't "useless". Should help him boost his hours to get on with a regional out of college (since it seems like he wants the airline gig)

Part 135 passenger carrying ops requires either an AP or SIC in lieu of. Granted the plane is about as bare bones as it gets, I would say the experience is still good. I did it that way, and I am sure I had seen way more than the typical CFI as far as adverse weather, airline ops and crew environment. Not saying it was more valuable than CFI, because it wasn't. Also, the examiners did not ask anything about the 1000 hours caravan SIC that I had when taking my ATP

*edit, I replied to the wrong person I think. This is directed towards @AA34. I've heard many people ask if the time is valuable, I would say the 100 plus approaches I had seen to mins, the ice encounters over the cascades and the decisions we would make as a crew to make it from A to B safely on a daily basis was a very good base early in my career. The plane being so easy and simple allowed me to really pay attention to the other factors affecting that flight.

At the end of the day, any legit way to hit that 1500 will benefit low time guys in a multitude of different ways.

An excellent post. As awesome as this is, I hope this young pilot realizes the reality of the situation financially. If you are bogged with debt, an SIC gig like this can be a serious stress. You make roughly 600 a paycheck after taxes. So take home, 1200 a month. That isn't much while she has to deal with rent, debt and not starving. Also, the schedules can make it very hard to have a second job, you have to have a flexible second job if that is the case as the airline gig will take priority. At my old airline, many guys racked up a bunch of debt trying to get by on that SIC pay, myself included.

So it's not all roses, but a good opportunity if she can grin and bear the pay.
