Looks like they were over the water.So..what happened to the bits and parts that departed the aircraft? Anyone check ebay yet?

Last thing you really want when there's smoke or potential fire in the cabin is, well, more oxygen and hot-assed oxygen generators.
I get it. You went to college. You're tier one, I am not.
I would say it depends. You don't want those without a crew oxygen mask breathing in toxins for an extended period of time. Not clearing the cabin of smoke/fumes quickly could have devastating effects. Years ago a C-141 crew died because of cyanide poisoning entering through their eyes. If you're at altitude (like an oceanic leg) and can't get down for gas or whatever or need to get it out fast, purging the smoke seems to be a critical move. Cabin altitude over 12.5k for my jet = cabin masks will drop. However I know nothing about the 737 or commercial aviation, and it sounds like there are different procedures for this type of situation which is quite interesting to me. It's always good to learn about different takes on a situation, as I think it makes you a more balanced aviator.
Don't...Definitely a case of Mad Cowl Disease!

This is our guidance, sardonically paraphrased so I don't violate the social media policy:
DA DA DA DAAAAANJA ZONE!: Don't activate the emergency pax oxygen system. It provides zero smoke protection for pax as it blends oxygen with cabin air, farts and other odors. It is also a fierce fire hazard.
Nice use of danger zoneI get it, they don't want you mixing O2 with a fire and masks don't do anything. Sounds like C17s are a bit different in that they want you to purge smoke at altitude which may require you to drop the masks.
You're right, I didn't know commercial airliners had chem systems for the pax. Some of our pax in back, depending on how many, may get fully sealable masks. If we have what we consider a lot, they would be on unsealed airline style Dixie cups providing 100% O2, but no smoke/fumes protection. And you're right, although smoke and fumes is going to almost always be a land ASAP, there are some places we'd rather not go.There are a couple of differences. All of your O2 comes out of a bottle, both for the crew and any extra people in the back. In a commercial aircraft it comes out of a bottle for the crew but chem generators for the passengers. Second, your extra masks are sealing and deliver pure O2. Chem generator masks mix based on the cabin pressure (hence the big bags attached to them) so they don't provide contaminate free air. Third, a commercial aircraft is going to divert as soon as something like that happens. A C17 is, depending on the mission going to at least make an attempt to continue if it can.

Not ALL commercial airliners have Oxy Gen's. The 727 had bottle O2 for the pax cabin..
Neither did the L1011 but not a whole lot of those flying around anymore.
I don't think anything in the current Boeing, Airbus, Embraer or Bombardier line has bottles.
This looks a lot like the failure MESA had about 10 years ago in DEN.

Fascinating. Happen to know any additional details or link to an open source report regarding this incident?
