The winds on the ATIS aren’t bad but winds aloft 500’+ were well above 50kts

Wow…in that case I can’t imagine what they must’ve been at the gate? Those winds get crazy on 4 as you get low.
Or think of it this way. 45 years ago you could have very easily flown into LGA on a 737. 45 years prior to that La Guardia had just been elected mayor and it wouldn’t be until over 5 years later in 1940 that Pan Am started flying into “LGA” with Boeing 314 flying boats.Nearly 45 years later, and this movie still delivers the goods.
45 years prior to 1980 would have been 1935, if you want to be depressed.
Yup they do. Plus the ILS requires you to hand fly it. No autopilot coupled approaches to that runway. Can get pretty hairy. You earn your money on that one. Those winds get crazy on 4 as you get low.

Oh I agree. Clear blue day it’s nothing. But on this day yes it was hairy.A handflown ILS is a hairy maneuver now. At yi yi……
They way they keep you in fast on this approach, coupled with a strong tail wind, followed up by windshear over the threshold, along with the shortish runway, does make it pretty challenging.A handflown ILS is a hairy maneuver now. At yi yi……

Coming from decades of HSIs the Boeing loc needle presentation really screws with my brain.Makes me wonder if they were getting FD bias because of the winds and didn't realize they were off the LOC...
