Some Resume' Advice for you guys...

It strikes me as odd that a 777 pilot posting on a professional networking website would choose the username 'TwilightFan91' then subsequently express displeasure at using a Gmail email account on a resume.

I have my yahoo email I've used for years and don't intend to change it. Funny thing is, I actually pay for my yahoo account. I also have another email address on that account I use only for aviation employment related emails and it's still yahoo. Oh well, I guess I will just have to deal with potentially not getting hired at some places. Pretty sure I'll live.

yup, seems a little short-sighted to throw away a resume because it has a gmail account linked to it...though I thoroughly agree with the firstname, lastname format. But many young people cannot afford to pay for an account, I know I can't. Are you going to pass on a well qualified candidate and go with a lesser one because the latter could afford to pay for an email address and the former is poor? There's professionalism and then there's circumstances. The having a professional name attached to the domain shows effort and respect. whether or not the domain is free or paid shows a possible financial situation. That sounds a little ridiculous to me..

I still don't understand where I am supposed to "buy" a "professional" email address.

Am I supposed to use my ISP's email?

Schedule I drugs, absenteeism, or wacky conspiracy theories. :p

This is precisely why I don't include my "hobbies". "Vast experience in cataloging and inventory management of canned foodstuffs, water, and rifle ammunition" doesn't seem like it fits under "skills", quite, either.

PS. I won't say it's always a bad idea to apply for a job you're not qualified for, but so help me deity-of-your-choice, if I'm ever in a position to hire someone and I get resumes that are lacking a qualification I explicitly posted as required, those resumes will not only go directly to the circular file, but will be in a "black book" as well. If you can't follow directions on an application, what other rules do you imagine "don't apply" to you?

I'd like to reserve veryprofessionalhireme@bigpimpinstore.org, please.

I would like to have: Iamsuitableforthisposition@bigpimpinstore.org hehehhehe

jokes apart. I have a gmail as well as a yahoo account. But the gmail id is for personal and yahoo is for professional. So that segregates my id's also its easy for me to check the emails. For years I have never had any problems from any recruiters with my yahoo account as long as it looks decent with some relevance to the individuals name. More on the resume part, as an engineer and having worked on some important projects, I believe having a 4 page resume, actually just 2 pages of tech info and the rest two pages contain the contact info and other relevant info's, would be fine with the HR's as long as they get the info what they want straight without having to microscope the resume.

Btw TS it is indeed a useful eye opener for newbie's and young ones who are looking for jobs.

I have both types of e-mail addresses but I put my free one on my resume.
It is my primary.

I solved it; what if we could put this free e-mail address on some type of paper that also told our history and accomplishments...oh wait.

I think Doug should start selling professional @jetcareers.com email addresses for three easy payments of $29.99!

I just had the hardest time hiring my replacement. If my HR guy admitted to trashing resumes because they said @gmail.com instead of @firstnamelastname.com he'd be out on the street. A CareerBuilder ad costs $750. Good, solid talent is hard to find. As evidenced by this thread.

To throw resumes out over an email address domain name is a waste of time and money. To then back up the argument by saying it is the same as a candidate showing up to an interview in jeans instead of a suit is even more so. It's more like a guy interviewing with a striped tie when he should have had on a solid.

Not that I'm putting out an open offer because I'm NOT and I don't want to play spam filter for all of your XXXAmateurGoatHardcoreAction.com video updates but I have, indeed, set up an email address for one of or users so he didn't have to use his yahoo email account! :)

Yar, something said "Danger Will Robinson. Thread Creep Danger! Woop! Woop!"

Mea culpa, Killy, mea culpa!

I'm in total agreement with TwilightFan91 when it comes to the e-mail address. Those with Yahoo, Gmail are not worth the effort to read. Professionals do not resort to free e-mail service that might just be spam to begin with. I cannot tell you how many kids, past their bedtime, have sent in requests for information from my company that turn out just that; bogus. Out of respect we do reply but the freebie types go into a "reserved for later" folder and are not given any attention. I have been on both sides of the hiring process and it always was noted that those who prepared properly got the most attention. There are sources out there that will help in resume' writing, interviewing practice etc. If you are looking for that dream job, prepare for it like you did for the written testing and check rides.
