Some Resume' Advice for you guys...

I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess that they choose to do so by things like hours, ratings, and past employers, rather than email addresses.

But that's just me.

Maybe, although if you follow the rest of the advice in this thread resumes from people who don't meet the qualifications shouldn't even be in there, right? ;)

Gmail has one of the most (if not the most) intuitive interfaces out there. Thus it would make sense that someone who chooses to use Gmail would be someone who values efficiency. Sounds like the kind of person I'd like to hire.

All this talk and still no concrete locations of "professional" email addresses.

I literally don't get it.

Please don't give anyone an easy reason to discriminate against your resume.

Just because a company may frown on an @yahoo.com email address doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad place to work at all. Don't make that presumption.

My best advice would to be to take the safe route, have a professional email address at a plain-jane domain just to make sure you have all of your bases covered. Take that professional, plain-jane email address and forward it to your OhMyGodRobertPattisonIsTotallyCuteW00tW00t@yahoo.com email address.

Besides, a lot of resume experts suggest a basic "job hunt only" email address that's not really referenced by searching the internet. Your thread about "Snookie is so much hotter than J-WOWW thread you wrote on an internet forum" might pop up! ;)

The last 4-5 jobs I've worked of which half were outside of aviation as well were all initiated, interviewed for, and hired on with a gmail address. Never seen or heard about it. 20/year for a paid yeah maybe I pay for other sites as well but its another 20 bucks I've never had a problem with before. If I were applying for those 100K and above jobs yup I'd probably pay for it.

BTW if you do buy one support godaddy they sponsor all the cool podcasts I like.

Doug, thanks for bringing that up. At my last job my CP instructed me to delete any resumes that had Will***ForFood or other such inane domain names.

So, between that and the resumes that actually had smilies and w00ts in the text there were few quailifed applicants to review. Made my job easier.

If you have 20 jobs to hire for and get 1000 resumes (not unheard of is it?) you're not going to read each and every one to find the best candidate... you'll nitpick it down to, say 100 and then read those more in depth.

Did you DQ a lot of qualified candidates? Yep.

Did you DQ the best candidate? Maybe.

Are there still qualified candidates in the stack? Absolutely.

Agreed. Where we differ, however, is this: I scan resumes (in my field, anyway) looking for particular skill sets and experience, not an applicant's email domain.

Absolutely, if I see something silly used as the email name (SuperGamer85@gmail.com or something similar), I'm going to raise an eyebrow. If his skills and experiences are what I am looking for though, I may still give him a call and screen him over the phone. Something like BobSmith@hotmail.com is fine by me. I'm more interested in tossing out the resumes of people who just don't have the right skill set or experience (which, admittedly, is a lot easier in my field than some).

We're all entitled to our opinions, and I respect your right to screen resumes based on any criteria you choose. That said, I think your opinion of 'free' email services like gmail, hotmail, yahoo, etc. is in the minority.

Well I am grateful for the post it is just food for thought ya know. I have had a yahoo address forever pretty much from all the way back in the 90's when I was overseas in the Air Force. It has treated me well. I am now wondering if I really should register my comcast address. I think I will just keep on trucking with my email as is. but it is food for thought thats for sure.

I think the overriding message is, is that you probably shouldn't be affixing I_love_milfs@whomever.com down on your application or resume.

Man, how'd you think I got my job with the FAA? They sure didn't hire me on my non-controlling experience.

...you know, you could probably turn a few extra bucks off of JC if you started selling out "xxxxx@jetcareers.com" email accounts for that very purpose. The title right there says it all. "My career is in jets, therefore, I have chosen to demonstrate it by my email address." I know at least two guys, one of whom may already have the above-mentioned Robert Patterson address, who would be surefire customers.

I actually own the domain "airlinepilot.com" which I could probably use for that purpose! ;)
