Skywest Questions

Any airport that is evaluated for an instrument approach is also evaluated for an ODP or SID. If neither exist, you are free to turn directly to your first fix at 400AGL, climbing at a rate of 200ft/nm. AIM 5-2-8

Winner. I've only had this happen once in 5 years here and thankfully remembered it. But I had to find it in the AIM to convince the captain. He still didn't believe me - thought we were missing a plate. But it's so rare (at least at the airports I regularly visit) not to have an ODP or SID or directions from ATC that I can understand forgetting this completely. I'd be looking long and hard for any guidance prior to just launching and making a turn direct to a fix.

Calling in sick...

I rolled my ankle pretty darn good last Thursday, I was pushing myself during box jumps working out and slipped and landed directly on my left ankle the wrong way. I was on reserve and had to call in for Friday as they assigned me a local. I start long call tomorrow and again have a local assigned, I am hobbling around this weekend and pretty sure I shouldn't be walking around airports and what not for a few more days. So I plan on calling in again tomorrow.

My main concern is that I'm only about 6 months in at OO. This will be my third sick call technically, although Friday's call was for the same issue. Will this put me on the radar with the chief? Prior to this, I called in back in Feb as I caught the whatever was going around in my crashpad and was in no state to fly a plane with sinus issues. Last thing I want is to be getting in trouble for sick calls, I already stress the fact I don't have enough user time to cover the calls so I will take a hit in pay..

If you're worried about it you can go the FMLA route. It would require a trip to the doctor. Honestly I wouldn't sweat it.

I know I tweaked it pretty good. I was hoping to relax this weekend and it would be bearable, but I'm leaning more towards going to the doctor tomorrow. I'm sure it's just a sprain and requires rest but I'm not super familiar with FMLA

You can start the process now. There's a link on the my stuff page under leaves of absence. If you're going to the doctor you might as well do it. Print the paperwork and take it with you to have your doctor fill in the required areas. You get something like 12 weeks a year no questions asked.

Thanks for the info!

I really wouldn't sweat it too much. Granted I probably call in way lower than the company average, and haven't had to do it when staffing is tight, but I've never gotten any grief or heard of anyone catching any grief for calling in (this year has been a doozey for my sinuses too).

Congrats!

Trying to figure out how long it takes to get a base is a crapshoot though. Even last year brand new FOs were going into PDX on the 175.

I'm curious what's going to be the new "DTW" 12 months from now. Timing is everything, and this industry is so fluid it's kind of interesting to watch and be a part of.

If it's anywhere but DTW, upgrade times are going to go back up. :P

Any magical predictions on how long it would take a new hire to hold SFO on reserve? Seems like things are really slowing down movement wise. I've been banished to ORD and I want to go home [emoji853]

Call in sick, worry about it (and you won't have to worry about it, that's legit) later.

Wow, sorry to hear that, I'd be surprised if you had to wait more than 3 months, but who knows, a few months ago it was where they were sticking new hires.

Still a lot of hiring going on and people moving onward and upward, don't despair, and keep LA and Seattle in mind too.

Thanks! One of the main reasons I applied was my buddy got hired in early December and got SFO out of Indoc. My class was in January and it seems a ways out now. Just from what I can see on SWOL.

I'm probably looking too closely but it seems like movement is really slowing down. It was super fast in January February and March. Now only one FO was awarded SFO and he was in the low 2000#s

Yeah, DVR is definitely not showing as much out west as it was just a few months ago. Thing is a lot, and I mean a lot of guys and gals are getting hired and leaving. So, despite the DVR you'll find awards going to people.

Don't despair, the DVR is merely a guide.
