Skywest Questions

What are your thoughts on the "loss of medical" insurance being offered at the first of the year?

Anyone planning to sign up?

I did the math for me and if I pay into the highest option for 12 years and go out at my Birthday at age 64, wait the 6 months of STD to get it I'll still get more back then my investment if the money in a current savings account. Three months earlier if I invested the money it like my retirement fund.

I am, definitely. And I really hope we get the numbers needed for it to go through.

A medical that's "not routine" in your early 20's is a massive, scary wake up call.

Hey everybody. Im kinda new here and trying get some information about Skywest. How do they pick your home base and airplane (CRJ or ERJ) ? You can choose or the company put you based on the company necessities ?

You can request the plane before starting training and that will be determined by company need.

Base is determined by seniority. Seniority is everything.

Keep in mind if you pick your airplane you're locked to that seat/aircraft for two years vs one if they pick for you.

Is the upgrade faster if they pick for me ?
Not sure what you mean, but regardless, you will hold captain on the CRJ long before the ERJ.

My advice, pick the CRJ. Reserve is really long on the ERJ, your seniority will get pushed down as more senior people transition, and you have WAY more base options on the CRJ, unless you happen to REALLY want to be based in PDX, which is ERJ only now.

Otherwise, you end up in the boat I'll be in, which is a year and a half here and barely 500 hours in type, with my seniority potentially being able to hold CRJ captain 4-5 months before I'll have the hours to hold it. Also, the ERJ is way more highly automated. The ERJ is a great airplane that I love flying, but upgrading AND going to a much less automated aircraft that I've never flown, which we fly 3 different variants of, is going to be a challenge. Maybe @Autothrust Blue can shed some light on that, although he flew the Bro and is much less stupider than I am.

The upgrade is much faster on the CRJ than the ERJ. That is my understanding anyway. If you want to upgrade quickly pick CRJ.
FWIW I think most junior CRJ captain is 1 year 10 months and most junior ERJ is right at 3 years if I remember right. Not a massive difference I guess if you're in no hurry to move elsewhere, but reserve is probably going to last a lifetime on the ERJ.

I'm 1 yr 9 months. Be afraid, very afraid. Need to see if I have 1000 hrs yet.

Even with the 9 more 175s coming in the next month and then the bunch after may?

Your quality of life will probably be drastically better faster too. If I was a CRJ FO in DTW (although the DTW part might hurt the QOL :P ) I'd be number 10. I STILL probably can't hold a full line in ORD as an FO on the 175.

Oh ya, well, what about SFO and LAX !?
Also I'm seeing , just from, our training classes, more CA are getting pulled by the majors... the attrition is increasing faster and faster.. idk how much that will affect the next few months.

You know, I'm pretty happy on the 175... just sayin'. ;> If I had it to do all over again, I'd choose the E-175 even faster.
