SkyWest or Horizon?

Ah, COS... Where the 4 day trips feel like 5 day trips. Those early show/late finish trips sucked. But walking 5 mins from the parking lot to the crew room was awesome.

The other thing about COS was the crews were either super cool or super weird. That's generally true of anybody in the Springs though.

What Gypsy said about COS. Also, it's a MX base. You will be bringing a busted POS in on your go home leg most of the time. Lots of ROW repo paint runs that don't start until 2100 and end at 0200. Repo flights up to DEN to sit ready reserve, then dh home. However, there are no more 4 day trips in COS, because, well, they did seem to take forever and lots of people complained.

So Someone sorta answered this already, but assuming I might eventually get a Skywest interview (right now I'm a DEN ramper for them until I finish my degree/hours), what are the chances of initially getting a Denver base (wouldn't mind Cos either)? My "goal" airline is Alaska, so I'm not sure if I should just shoot for Horizon since I also wouldn't mind any of their bases either.

Horizon would be your best bet for Alaska, but SkyWest definitely for a local Denver guy. I think Denver is realistic pretty quick out of training, probably with a long period on reserve though.

Alaska is a tough nut to crack, they seem extremely picky on who they hire. Not even really sure what they look for as I know highly qualified people they've passed up. It might take another stop after the regionals to get some larger jet time before you are competitive.

A person from my Brasilia new hire class 3 years ago was just picked up by Alaska... No TPIC, no jet time. She did have some 121 PIC time from Cape Air though.

Now, before I shoot myself in the foot here, can somebody list the current SKW EMB and RJ bases? For the longest time I thought DEN and COS were both EMB bases??? And is Skywest hiring into all airframes currently or just the 120? Thanks guys!

Hiring into both frames. SLC is the only bro base outside California (pdx aside)

You go to Ameriflight.

The only reason to really go to AMF now is if you want other AMF pilots to think you're cool.

I waffled between AMF and Skywest when hiring was picking up in 2011 and I ended up at AMF because they called me back and offered me a job before Skywest even acknowledged me. Oh sure, I became a master of /A IFR flying, but QOL was diarrhea and the flying got boring very quickly. Do you have any idea what it's like to know every frequency and radial for 10 different airports completely by memory because you do it day in and day out? Everyday becomes a challenge to see if you can get home a minute earlier than yesterday because you get paid the same no matter what.

First year pay at Skywest was rough, but now I'm making a living wage and QOL is better than AMF by many orders of magnitude.

I only recommend AMF to anti-social people who yearn for a feeling of superiority in order to be validated. Normal, social, confident people should do just fine at Skywest or Horizon.

I'll be there in 11 days though!

Congrats. Enjoy studying your balls off for that bird plus all the company indoc stuff in week 1. My sim partner from initial teaches the class part time. It's a good community and it will be one of the funner (is that a word? Spell check says yes) airplanes you fly in a 121 environment. Also a great way to get fast QOL at the company because things move quickly on the Bro FO side!

I'm just finishing transition to the RJ. I know the last Bro class that went through had a guy wash out. We had 4(!) new hires wash out of RJ systems.

I think you would have been fine with either company, BTW. Skywest is a great company and I don't feel much of that "regional" vibe that seems to sour guys at other airlines. Lots of happy people here. Lots of people spend their whole careers here. It ain't perfect, but if you want to be paid to fly airplanes, this place makes it relatively painless, all things being equal.

Very much so. I have lot's of time in /A flying freight and more... Still though, I think AmFlight is the right move for guys with less time looking for PIC in the western states.

This. I was at AMF for 3 years and I make more 2nd year at SKW and my QOL is MUCH better. Yea, at AMF you're "home everynight" but I only had 4-6 days OFF a month. I average 14 days off a month now...

Same here, were you in the Feb class or the March class?

March. What base? Were you at the big Lofte's party at the end of the Feb class?
