Skiles and Age 65+

SkyWest has been doing that crap for years.
They stopped doing that at the beginning of covid and sent them all packing. With all the strange things happening here recently, wouldn’t be surprised if the program got brought back.

But ya, you right. They’d been doing it for some time.

One of the things that Chip never understood, as he yelled at me in the basement of River Road when I was a 175 FO and newly minted rep, was that it was not merely about the money, but about the fact that I was also never home, had no control over my schedule other than calling in sick, and that I got awarded 96 hours a month whether I wanted it or not (I did not).

Things said in sarcasm. But yeah, to all of that.

Nearly 69 here, and very aware of how things change as the years pass, cognitively and physically.

Retire with grace as early as you can. Enjoy the memories of days gone by and make the most of every sunrise and sunset, whether alone or with loved ones.

I'm telling you, that's the best advice you'll ever get.

old dude refuses to give up the reins and wants to pretend he’s still 35 so he can keep flying indefinitely?

color me shocked.

don’t these guys have hobbies?
I doubt they have hobbies that pay 400k a year. Some of these guys work 12 days a month, so it’s not like they’re breaking rocks or something.

I mean fair… but also… Jesus dude, retire and do something fun.

It strikes me that perhaps a lot of the problems were currently seeing in society are a direct result of the boomers basically being one-dimensional work robots who derive the majority of their satisfaction with life from… well… working?

I mean , don’t get me wrong - I loved flying and wish I could still do it… but also, like dude… I hope I’m not doing anything at 60 except maybe (maybe) something fun.

I would love to retire at 60. That was the retirement age when I started, and that’s what I was planning for.
Then came furlough number 1 in 1995.
Then furlough number 2 in 1998.
Then furlough number 3 in 2002.
Then furlough number 4 and 5 later in 2002 and 2003.
Then they raised the retirement age to 65.
Then the 08’ financial crisis.
Then I decided to sew my wild oats and try corporate for nearly a decade.
And before I knew it I was starting at another major in my 40s.

It is extraordinarily difficult to make headway on retirement savings when you are starting over every few years. As a result I’m anywhere from 1.5 million to 3 million behind my peers in retirement savings with 15 years to go. So the likelihood that I’ll be in a position to retire in 10 years seems extremely low. Doing my best though. I love flying, but not as much as I love sitting around doing nothing. I was built for that!
