Shocking news, Dan Gryder is a POS

Some of y’all have never been called by a newsroom producer to come on air and it shows. They called someone to talk about DB Cooper, they just happened to call Dan Gryder and the EP’s assistant asked what do we call you for the chyron “aviation consultant, aviation professional, or an aviation expert?”

Seriously? So you get to pick your own description?

That’s insane.

This is why people call the media fake news.

Just turn on the TV and watch a news segment, some 20s or 30s something yr old with an “international terrorism expert” label.

WTH. I’ve been flying planes since 17, airlines since 23, and 40 today, and I wouldn’t dare call myself an “expert” in aviation/flying. And yet you have people younger than that with “expert” labels on every topic under the sun on national news TV. What a joke.

Good. Because it’s not like you’ve done anything to broaden your aviation experience like getting a CFI, flying a variety of GA aircraft, other category ratings etc. Glad you have at least some self-awareness.

Oh please. I’m not in GA and don’t profess to speak on things GA. My field is Part 121 and has been for 17 years now.

You field hasn’t ever been anything but glass panel airliners.

Have you ever been a check pilot, in a training department, worked with ASAP/FOQA, any ALPA safety committees? I suspect there’s a *lot* of people with less time in the industry than you who have much more relevant aviation/airline expertise.

A suit, you’re on national tv

There's a ton of data that shows that depending on WHAT the person is supposed to be an expert in, their clothing heavily influences people's trust of their knowledge. I wouldn't trust a mechanic providing an expert opinion on TV as much as I'd trust one who was wearing coveralls in the corner office of their repair shop. A doctor in a button down shirt and rolled up sleeves seems more trustworthy than one in a ripped t-shirt, or one in a 3 piece suite. Same reason that Sully almost always wore his pilot uniform when he went on TV until he retired.

The production assistant does that a hundred times a day, they don’t care if the story is about animals and you’re a zookeeper or a puff piece of flowers and you’re a rose enthusiast. That’s just how it goes.

Unless it is a major outlet that has the budget for a legal or medical expert on payroll, this is what you get because of capitalism. If I remember correctly, there’s at least one major national news network correspondent on this site.

Does LOSA count? In any event, I don’t claim to be an expert, but your mindset is why we have youngsters at 26 writing novels about their “illustrious” careers. No, I don’t care for their checkairman experience. You, at 26, can only know and have flown so much.

Like most things in like, experience comes with time.

(Unless you’re military, that’s a different ball game than the civ world)

This is a reason why Delta is keeping the sub commander uniform. It has a specific resonance with the public whether pilots like it or not.

To be fair, there are several segments of the corporate world where the title "senior XYZ" is a new hire position. We just invent names that sound fancy sometimes.

CNN just wants attention and it's working.

I'm sure they can arrange to have Dan and Karlene mud wrestle in a competition to see who provides "expert insight" while sticking it SouthernJets at every opportunity.
