Scabs

That's what we are talking about. You need to be ready, it's part of the deal!

I can agree wholeheartedly on that idea!!!

There are no excuses on this subject; once you make one exception where do you draw the line? nobody wants to go on strike!!!

Still sounds like some political gang-bangin going on.

So, I guess you're saying that you won't scab?

I am putting myself in a situation where I wouldn't have to. At the same time if something were to happen and my family's survival depended on me bringing in a paycheck then I have to gets to working any way I can.

We are saying it's wrong.

Sorry I cut off the rest of that sentence, but ultimately I hope any man would put his family's welfare above anything and everything and get his hustle on and do anything legal to provide for his family. Personally if I were to ever be in that situation to strike, it would only mean having steak 5 of the 7 days. For others, it simply means not eating at all and those are the people I would give a pass to. Lastly, those are the people I'm speaking of but for some reason it's being taken as a personal "what-you-would-do" when I clearly stated that I wouldn't strike at all, I'd just find another job.

Note: If anybody has any questions/comments aimed at this see if you can find your answer in the last paragraph, if you can't then we will always wonder!!!!!!

Nobody gets a pass. It's a choice that you have to make long before you're in the situation.

I think I'd get kicked out of the house if I scabbed.

Sorry, but I don't buy this one. I know unions are a part of airline life--fine. And sometimes they choose to strike. Granted. But honestly, when you get down to it, airline strikes come down to one thing--money. Pilots (usually) strike over money, not working conditions.

I'd say pay is certainly part of the working conditions of a job, wouldn't you?

And yes, if you're being told "take paycuts and kiss your pension goodbye and pay more for benefits" while the guys telling you that are setting up bankruptcy proof pension plans and taking huge bonuses, you are getting shafted.

I'm a team player, and I'll take one for the team from time to time. But if I'm getting muddy and dirty and bloody, and then the quarterback who hasn't got a spot of mud on him because of my sacrifice says, you gotta get dirtier and bloodier, I'm gonna say, hey, listen, buddy, you don't have any mud on your jersey. Why don't get dirty like the rest of us before you tell me to get bloodier.

I don't know the name, and heard about it here on JC. It was a while back. A woman CA I believe flying 747 or 777 for UAL now. If I remember I think the comment was she also crossed a picket line when at CAL, as well as while at UAL.

Sorry, that is all I remember.
i dont think she ever flew for cal. if it is <name removed> she is a ca for united on the 777. she is on the list.

I'll let you have the last word, other than to say I disagree with your position and have explained why in this thread.

At least one of these 'college' students on here knows A LOT more about this industry than you or I my friend.
Yeah? Who would that be, and where'd they get all this knowledge? If the answer is "their dad blah blah blah" then no, they don't get a pass and still need to keep their yapper zipped. Kids never know the complete story of their parents' experiences.

I know we have a lot of guys flying Pt 121 who are still working on their degrees, and that's not who I'm talking about.

i dunno about that. this guy sure knows a lot. it sounds like he has a good relationship with his parent and they talk about a lot of what life is like as an airline pilot. so they arent there for the day to day but that does not mean they are behind on what is going on.

Just because the thread is about scabs shouldn't mean one has to get a pass to unzip their yapper. Sounds like the Chris Farley skit where he's yelling at the kid who doesn't wanna live in the van down by the river ("shut yer big yapper!").

I'm getting double speak here. Either you'd scab, or you wouldn't?

Living in a union hotspot and being the son of an airline employee, there's something about good pro-union talk that gets me all righteous and stuff. :D;)

I likely have a lot more knowledge of the inner-workings of the Postal Inspection Service than a local cop does, simply because I lived the first 24 years of my life under the same roof as my father who served for that particular segment of law enforcement. So you'd take the opinion of anyone currently active in law enforcement over myself when it comes to questions about that particular job?

I was two years old when the Continental strike occurred. I think I could pick up a thing or two from the son or daughter of a pilot directly involved in that strike, rather than going by the limited knowledge I have of being a Continental Express pilot and ALPA member for two and a half years.

Well, there's a couple of points I'd like to preach about...

Good post way back there Doug.

Some things deserve no forgiveness.

Your family is married to this career. If you can't live with that, find a new career.

Yep.

And to clarify for the record here folks, I truly was 'thinking aloud' back there. Scabbing sucks to no end. Wouldn't think of it for many reasons, one including my Dad would likely beat to me a pulp.

Our family owns a unionized construction company (we choose to be union) and we have dealt with the ups and down of unions all our life.

Ok Seggy, I think I am on board with you now. After reading how some here think that any circumstance is ok to scab over, I get it now. Preach on brutha!

Maybe if they called them cauliflower warts, instead of scabs, it would paint a better picture.. ;)

No, they still won't get it. They'll just say that for some people, it's important to appreciate that not everybody is afraid of the wart, and that when it comes to getting paid, a wart is sometimes acceptable.

You have no idea. I am 21, and a college student. I guess I wasn't even alive when the strike and scabs that I know the most about happened. Does that make me an idiot about the subject? Absolutely not. I think you should (and the rest of JC probably does) respect people's knowledge about subjects that they are more knowledgeable in. I know I do, And I would expect the same back.

I'll leave it that.

Actually read flying the line. And then read it again.

If you want to take this further and ask some questions feel free to PM me.
