Sad Realization

I wasn't holding breathe for that kind of opportunity but I thought it might have been an option that is all.

I wouldn't even have considered that an option.

The hardest thing I have done in my career so far is to accept a street captain position on a new type with a new company. Even with prior experience as a 121 FO, adjusting to a new type and how a new company ran their operation (all while FOs/operations/dispatchers looked to me for leadership and answers at times) was extremely challenging. I can't imagine trying to make the jump from 135 prop captain to 121 jet captain. Sorry, but there are things that need to be seen in the 121 environment that are best seen and learned from the right seat first.

Whatever! Freight is great! Anything you can do, a freight pilot can do better!!!

People end up staying too long at AMF then get stuck.

I would submit that anyone that stays at any company for a long time, does so because they are comfortable. They like what they have.

As far as getting "stuck", it's just a matter of getting uncomfortable. Or old. Not much of a cure for the latter.

Nobody should have considered that an option, as there was never an idea within the industry that if you flew 135 freight as a PIC, that you could go in as a street captain at an airline. At no point was that a common, logical step. No offense to the OP but that has to be one of the more ridiculous things I have heard on this forum. I expect that from rockman2343@aol.com but not from anyone else...

It is amazing to sit around AMF bases and listen to the guys talk about how great they are and how great AMF is. Some guys really do think they can take their pick of any corporate job, or certainly go to any part 121 carrier of their choice (including main line). And as already posted here, no one can name the people that went to 121 legacy airlines straight from AMF, but there are still stories about it happening.

The truth is, that there are some previous 121 guys that are still at AMF. Some have a few thousand hours in 121 (jets) and left AMF in the recent past. Those guys are certainly eligible to go to somewhere like JetBlue or even Southwest. To say that they went straight from AMF to JetBlue is true, but you are leaving out a HUGE part of the story. If you can say that, I can say that there is an AMF dispatcher that went straight to Omni to fly a 767 a month ago. (granted, he was a 121 captain for several years before getting furloughed and spending a couple years as a dispatcher at AMF).

Can I paypal you a beer? This is RIGHT ON.

It is the part of freight flying and AMF that I do not like being associated with. The delusional dick measuring and cocky attitudes that these guys can go anywhere really drives me nuts. Everyone that has apps in at the big 3 and swore it was gonna happen at anytime, are either still there, or have left for jobs that the rest of us took years ago. It would be hilarious if they weren't friends and they weren't so delusional.

Everyone knows a guy who knows a guy that met a guy who went to a major right from AMF 13 years ago. Nobody knows the details of the story, who the person is, and they aren't willing to admit that times have changed. It is probably the most odd bubble I have ever witnessed within the industry. Other freight operators are not like that either, it just seems to be AMF guys.

No it wasn't one of those. I came to AMF cuz I didn't know what I wanted and I figured it would be a good start. Now I'm looking around at what my options are. That is all.

If you went there without a plan how can something like this upset you (since it's not part of the plan).

On the bright side it sounds like you realize you need to make a plan to get wherever you want to get to.

Uh. I can name a few off the top of my head. I'm not one to publicly put people's names on the interwebs.

You have to go back to 2007 or earlier though. I know a few BFI based pilots that went to Alaska and a CVG based pilot that went to UPS.

I no there me be some that have drank the Kool aid and others who are just plain naive, but during the early and mid 2000's...it was very possible to happen.

I TDY 'd for a guy who went from flying the 99 to new hire at "Continental".

IT WAS HAPPENING.

The operative word being "was". But yeah, I guess I'm kind of like you. There was a time where these kinds of things happened. Either left seat at a commuter or right seat at a "Major/Legacy/Whatever". I think for the most part those days are behind us, but I'm confused by the notion that the OP was crazy to think about it. Like no one else has ever thought of having some awesome, unlikely thing happen to them and their career prospects? Guess he just made the mistake of saying it out loud.
