Rumor Mill: SkyWest mins lowered

Gotcha. Just a thought.

No, really, it's a good thought, but it was a bitter pill to swallow when I got into this business.

I've had a zillion ideas to improve things, make things safer, more efficient thoughout my airline career and most chief pilots will tell you, "You know, you need to write it down, take your name and especially your department off of it and drop it into the executive wash room."

Think of the most petty, navel contemplating, jealousy-driven, reinvent-the-wheel inspired business, multiply it by six and then add liberal amounts of "pilots are overpaid, arrogant, underworked bastards" and there you have the airline business.

And as a result of that TA, Skywest was awarded with more flying, more airplanes, and therefore more movement.
It's great you got bigger and more airplanes for the same amount of pay. I'm really happy for you guys. :sarcasm:

Keep in mind if mainline guys had this thought:

"hey! I'll upgrade to captain in a 777 if I agree to fly it for the same rate as the 727 CA! We'll get a TON of orders then!"

we'd have no place to "look forward" to going to.

If everyone turned down pay concessions for growth, guess what? The growth would still come...(or better yet go to mainline).

I'm taking this all a little too personal. I apologize especially to Omar, for my last post. I take pride in the position I've attained and I really, truely enjoy my job. This talk of lowering the bar and directly stealing jobs from other pilots is a bit insulting. I am a company man through and through. All of us on the hiring board must be. . . I respect those that are in authority over me (it's part of my upbringing, both as the son of a full bird Colonel in the Air Force and a God fearing Christian).

I got into this industry to be able to fly airplanes while providing for my family living where we wanted. I've about reached that goal! There may be one more move for me, but if I'm to stay at Skywest, I'll be fine. I feel I am well compensated. I am not one to join the vocal minority when it comes to issues that I, personally, have no vested interest in. It's peaches and cream in my little bubble and maybe I don't want to burst it. If it ain't broke, I'm not going to fix it.

If something is great for you but not so great for others, who gives a sh*t right?

I know you're going to say no, especially how I worded it. But when a company is having problems filling classes, something's wrong. Your pay sucks the first year, then after that it is much much better. I've heard great things about Skywest and it kind of makes me cringe when I hear comments such as yours.

In my opinion, the airlines will always have troubles. There is too many people from different backgrounds working there:

Military pilots, some could care less what they're paid because of their pension.

Pilots high up on the seniority list really don't want to lose time invested in the company, so they vote for whichever way keeps their job.

Young pilots, some could care less about the pay, they just want a job.

I could go on and on, but this problem will never go away. Someone is always going to be unhappy. Lets just hope the airlines start to improve pay and QOL.

Seems everyone is lowering mins these days which I think is great for everyone. I mean flying a 172 around being a CFI doesn't really teach you much to prepare you for a 121 job.

I hear that SkyWest is one of the better regionals to work for these days, will have to go look for the pay. Anyone know how long one will sit on reserve these days?

It's all about the CFI-I skillz -- I couldn't imagine where I would have learned non-flying pilot skills without my time as a CFI.

What are you talking about? Flight instructors don't do anything. I mean they just sit there and watch somebody else fly! And when you think about it, it's pretty amazing that somebody with no time can go out and fly an aircraft all by themselves! Nobody needs to be there to teach them, demo things to them, save them when they try to kill themselves or anything!

Flight instructing is so worthless!

I heard somewhere that the unofficial mins were 800/150 but I cannot document that anywhere, like I said Unofficial Mins.
What the hell kind of sense would that make? Their official mins are 1000/100. Why would they lower the TT and raise the multi? Most pilots will get to 1000 TT long before they get 150 multi.

My point is if they are lowering mins because they are having trouble finding qualified pilots, why would they raise the multi mins? Like I said, most pilots will get 1000 TT long before 150 multi so why bother lowering the TT. Just raise the multi and have even fewer qualified candidates.

I did read last night that SKYW has joined the ATP club and now gives preference to people who do the ATP Regional Jet transition class. I thought SKYW would never go for this crap!

I wonder how much $$ ATP is throwing at these airlines to take their guys. That letter of agreement can't just be a good gesture from skywest and other airlines.

Damn... I need to finish my training now before the regionals make it mandatory for perspective pilots to do this crap ass regional course!!!

As I said in another thread, I am really bummed SKYW did this ATP thing. I was hoping our minimums would hold fast. Grrrr
