QX2059 Jumpseater tries to shutdown engines

I'll start with the news article is terrible, and kind of disgusting. Who takes a picture of the front porch and just canvasses the neighbors for click bait? The family is dealing with enough.... However, and I understand how much of a tangent this is..... How is THAT house is $1.2 million? Housing prices are wild. Good for them to be able to afford it but what? That's looney tunes.
I take it you've never been to Pleasant Hill.

Really makes me wonder what the convo/atmosphere in the cockpit before the incident was like. I mean if it was quick I don’t see how he wouldn’t have been successful in turning an engine off
That has been my thought too. I would think if this was a premeditated thing, it would be far too easy to just reach up and do it before anyone could react. Wonder if truly was the culmination of a mental breakdown and what triggered it. Of course that is completely based in nothing except trying to satisfy my need for senseless things to make sense.

No that's fair, I get it. Reading the stories and stats is one thing, but then seeing specific examples like that is just jarring. I think most of the state is beautiful, but it makes the prices even here in (upstate) NY seem reasonable.

I hate commuting.

It might be one of the places on Earth I'd still move (back) to, knowing I'd be commuting for the rest-of-my-career.

I’m in California currently in escrow at 1.425m and given this particular house size of 3,1xx sqft, I feel like I hit the lottery.

Previously lost a couple homes by being outbid. I recall 1.385m and 1.498m were both lost. Those homes were ~2400-2500 sq ft.

Nothing to write home about. These exact homes would be about $300-600k in most of America. But in CA and especially South Bay, “location, location, location.”

WTF

In the official criminal complaint, Emerson is stated to have been sitting in the cockpit's jumpseat when, after chatting with pilots for several minutes, suddenly said “I’m not okay," before pulling the handles of the fire suppression system, which are used to stop engine fires and shut off fuel to the engines.

One of the pilots grabbed Emerson while the other declared an inflight emergency. He initially resisted, but records say he settled down after a roughly 30-second struggle.

The court documents state Emerson wasn't able to fully pull down the handles and fully shut off the engines. If he had, "then it would have shut down the hydraulics and the fuel to the engines, turning the aircraft into a glider within seconds."

Witnesses said Emerson peacefully walked to the back of the plane, and once seated in the back he reportedly told a flight attendant "you need to cuff me right now or it's going to be bad." They put his wrists in a pair of flex cuffs.

During a police interview, Emerson said he was having "a nervous breakdown," and hadn't slept for 40 hours, and felt dehydrated and tired. He admitted to pulling the handles and said he did it because "I thought I was dreaming and I just wanna wake up."

"The officer and Emerson talked about the use of psychedelic mushrooms and Emerson said it was his first time taking mushrooms," a probable cause document said.

Ope there it is. It’s definitely better to motivate pilots to try to self medicate than to have a path to retain their medical while in treatment….

Wow that's wild. Congrats (fingers crossed I know it's still escrow) on the house though! Sounds like a steal comparatively.

Wait I thought he was moving to texas or Tennessee or something? Still after all these years won’t put his money where his mouth is?

My understanding is that there is specific neighborhood in Dallas that is a pilot's oasis, but yet still won't move there.

Well.... that doesn't make it easier for him, but should help prevent any over reaction that would impact jumpseaters.
