QX2059 Jumpseater tries to shutdown engines

Since when are the police known for taking their time and getting all the facts straight? It seems he was charged before the paxs even made it home.

I’m calling it now. It was a accident and the media is running with it.
This hasn't aged well, has it?

Ope there it is. It’s definitely better to motivate pilots to try to self medicate than to have a path to retain their medical while in treatment….

While I still hold out hope that this incident will reform mental health options for pilots, I am concerned that it will only result in the use of hair testing for random drug tests. Which if implemented are far more intrusive and impactful on privacy than a urinalysis test.

Saw an FFDO use his badge to get an LE discount at Chik fil a, telling the cashier he was “ on duty”. My partner beat me to pulling him aside quietly to tell him that 1. He’s not LE, he’s at best, a cockpit security guard. 2. He’s not on duty, and 3. Even when on duty, his jurisdiction is about 15 or so square feet, give or take.

Nitwit.
Minor technicality but, it’s a first responder discount, not just LE. LE,FF,EMS/EMT etc all get it

Correct. He was claiming to be part of that, was my broader point.
I’m not sure where the distinction is lol, I mean, he gets the LE discount with H&K (or they used to) and several other companies. I can see why expectations would be set. Regardless carry on

An off-duty Alaska Airlines pilot said he took "magic mushrooms" about 48 hours before authorities say he tried to shut off a plane's engines midflight, according to court documents filed Tuesday. Joseph Emerson told investigators in the aftermath of Sunday's midair scare aboard a San Francisco-bound flight that he thought he was dreaming and wanted to wake up, an Oregon prosecutor said in an affidavit.

That is an odd delineation, though. Interesting point there.

The same reason my shooting buddy gets a great discount as a fire fighter. He is considered a first responder.

Flashing the badge is a really stupid thing to do. I'll leave it at that but you can as an FFDO register for first responder discounts. Pretty sure I'm not braking SSI here.

Way back in the day, there were places whigh offered discounts to ministers and, sadly (to me), there were ministers who asked about and used them. I think that has pretty much disappeared these days - properly - but there are a substantial number of places which quietly offer discounts to first responders (FFs, LE, EMS). Some take advantage of that reality. I never chose to, personally, and on the ride-alongs I've done the LEOs I was with always declined.

Dining out when uniformed officers happened to be there eating, I've occasionally paid surreptitiously and without recognition for their check (including tip), based upon how "flush" with cash I was at the moment. I'm guessing most of them neither expected a discount at the register nor expected that an unknown stranger might cover their tab. I've also done that on occasion for people I knew across a crowded restaurant or strangers, not need-based but because I chose to.

Kids' inheritance will be less one day but it was mine to spend while I could, and in the moment it mattered to someone🤷‍♂️

It’s so randomly all over the place… as NSP I can get all the discounts. Only thing I’d consider is firstnet, but it’s only recently AT&T has become decent here..

A bunch of our flight nurses use firstnet, I’m sure the pilots could probably sneak in on it but not sure I know of any that do

48 hours? So that’s a new data point and begs the question about timeline. What did he do in the time between eating fungi and commuting? Did he operate or sit holed up in a hotel or crashpad…. ?

There are nearly 24K passenger flights per day in the U.S. As I understand it, this has happened twice in 30 years. That means the probability of this occurring is 1:131,400,000 ... give or take.

Forgive me for asking as someone who isn't a Part 121 pilot, but why do we need to do anything different? Perhaps what we're doing is working pretty well.
Let's look more globally...

EgyptAir Flight 990
China Eastern Airlines Flight 5735
Germanwings Flight 9525

I'm sure there are others...

TSA: “taps forehead”

Can’t have these incidents if people just aren’t allowed on flight deck at all!
Whats to stop the pilot on duty from doing this without someone in the jumpseat? I don't see the difference.

Full disclosure.. I'm not a pilot. But if crashing an airplane is as easy as pulling 2 levers, what's the point of having a flight attendant in the cockpit (aftermath of Germanwings) if a pilot needs to use the restroom?

The part that irks me is that as a jumpseater on the flight deck you are an additional crewmember.

Which means you need to be medically fit to fly.

He was nowhere near this and decided - yes, made a conscious decision - to leverage his privileges and occupy a jumpseat.

He might as well have been drunk.

And whatever sympathy I have is strained there because a 121 Captain goddamned well should know better.
