PSA New Hire FO Classes Suspended

Sure, move to cvg. Then when they close the base you move again? That's just a foolish thing to suggest unless you're single and have no friends

You know what everyone else has to do when they get relocated in almost every other profession? Its called the real world. Pretty much every cba has moving benefits for base closures and displacements. The last time PSA closed a base was over 10 years ago, that is pretty good for the airline business, Surejet has about 8 in the past 5 years.

Right. Because the airline world is exactly like the real world. Where people receive COLA adjustments based on where they live. And where they get hired to a specific location guaranteed.

And where locations don't come and go as quickly as airlines open and close bases.

But sure, keep telling yourself it's just like the real world.

We aren't all riddle kids who never have had a job or career prior to aviation....

So I guess you have never checked the willing to relocate box on an airline pilot application? You sound more entitled than any Riddle kid I've ever flown with.

Commuting is a choice. This coming from a guy that commuted for 8 years but I understood that it added time, money, and stress and I never got why others complained about the company not catering to commuters. We all checked the box the said we were willing to relocate when we appied for the job. There are a lot of nice areas within a 2 hour drive of CVG that have a cheap cost of living. Even for those that do commute CVG has a lot of options on Delta for an outstation base.
Many have checked that box but it really is a dick move to have most of your bases as outstation bases in places people generally don't want to live. If you are unable to move you are garaunteed a 2 leg commute. They are also notorious for not being very stable as bases.

A lot changes after you check that box. You could be single and have no issues moving around the country. After a while other factors will come into play (House, spouse, kids, ect) that change things.

Let us not forget that your "willing to relocate" checkbox does not exist on every app.

I could care less personally where PSA wants to open a base... I'm in my base and it isn't going anywhere. I do however think thy outstation basing does absolutely zero to help attract any of the 2,000+ new hires they want through 2017.

That's what Eagle (envoy) pilots said about their MIA base, XJT about all of their bases that have closed (most predominantly DEN), Compass and their DTW base (and more and more seemingly their MSP Base) etc. and that's only in the last year.

Any base is up for closure at any given point in time. This is precisely why Cybourgs view on this as a comparison to what he calls "the real world" is essentially flawed. Especially at the regional level. We are at the whim of the major airline partners.

In the last 10 years PSA has now opened 1 base (CVG) and closed 0. Chrisreed is safe in CLT for a while. I just point out the hypocrisy of saying you are willing to relocate and then complaining about relocating in a career field notorious for closing bases.

I know he is fine in clt.just pointing out how quickly things could change.

And past performance is no measure for the future. See eagle (envoy)

First off... tell that to the PIT and CAK guys (the BWI guys before them). No base is safe. And I'm guessing you COULDN'T care less about, but who knows.

Secondly, CVG is far, far from an outstation base. Ask some of the old timers who were based in Erie or Evansville and Hagarstown (of there are any left) about outstation basing. Sure, Cinci doesn't have a lot of flights but between PHL, JFK, DCA, CLT, ORD and possibly MIA there are a lot of options of routes to fly. Plus, every other major airline (plus a few less than major ones) have service in there. That's a pretty easy commute from anywhere east of the Mississippi River.

Wut?

All those cities mentioned were PSA crew bases at some point. My guess at what the guy is trying to say is particular attention should be paid to PIT and BWI, both US fortress hubs at the time, were also thought to be safe bases.
I got it, he just came at me like a spider monkey.

Mostly. I was saying that assuming CLT won't ever close (or at least won't close in the short term) is kind of silly as any base (especially when your flying is subject to the whims of a mainline partner) can be closed in a heartbeat. Also, whether the intent was there or not, it came across as "who cares, I got mine so... whatever".

Secondly, the "outstation" term being thrown around for Cinci is pretty disingenuous. The Colgan guys based in Rockland, ME were "outstation" based. The CapeAir guys based in Cape Girardeau are outstation based. I'd argue that TYS is more of an "outstation" than CVG is. And, keep in mind that with the amount of training that will be going on in the future, there will always be a need to base guys in Cinci. There is no staffing formula in the contract that requires a certain amount of pilots in a given base so it's entirely possible the base will have just a few pilots to cover some trips out of there and then the rest of the base will be instructors working the sims.

And not my intent to go all spider monkey.

Eh, CVG is an outstation. You can get there direct from ORD, EWR, ATL, DFW, MCO etc, but from anywhere that's not huge it's going to be two legs. It is for all intents and purposes an outstation commute and is probably going to be two legs.

And rightly so.

How long have you been at PSA? Yet you're all "I got mine, screw all'y'all!"

From keeping in touch with captains at PSA it kind of seems like the old school flight crew attitude of "we are all in this together" has pretty much disappeared as there aren't enough of the old guard left to influence all the new guys.

I wasn't all, "I got mine screw all ya'll" at all... All I was saying was that I don't have any personal stake in where PSA opens a base, therefore I don't get worked up over a base announcement. And I don't think CLT Is going anywhere anytime soon. Yins need to chill.

Geez, this thread went almost to APC levels in the last page or so.
