F-16s Buzz Lady Liberty, Put City on Edge

An Air Force One lookalike and two F-16s circled the Statue of Liberty in New York harbor this morning, halting work on nearby construction sites and giving thousands of people in downtown Manhattan and New Jersey quite the scare.

"Everybody panicked," said Daisy Cooper, a Merrill Lynch worker in Jersey City, who lost a nephew on 9/11. "Everybody was screaming and we all ran downstairs. I'm devastated. ..Everybody was running, we didn't know why we were running. We just knew it was a plane, there we go, 9/11 again."

The Air Force One lookalike is a back up plane for the one used by the president, The New York Times reported. The plane is designated by the Defense Department as a VC-25 but is recognizable to the public as a Boeing 747.

The Federal Aviation Administration said there was no reason for alarm, even thousands of people saw the two fighter jets circle the statue, along with a VC-25, and immediately thought the worst.

"Thousands" of people in the streets of Jersey City were set into a panic, said Stan Eason of the Jersey City Police Department. Buildings were evacuated because residents were unaware what was going on, Eason said. Thousands of Jersey City office workers fled their office buildings in fear of another 9/11 attack.

"It's completely asinine after 9/11 to do that," said Keith Mercantine, who witnessed the chaos in Jersey City. "I saw ambulances out here with pregnant women."

Eason was checking to see if any authorities were notified. They received a number of calls and were prompted to call the FAA.

"They were making two, maybe three passes," FAA spokesman Jim Peters told News 4 New York. "The (Department of Defense) and the FAA worked this all out in advance."

You have got to listen to the lady there. Maybe it's just me and I know AF1 when I see it?

That about sums up it up. Everyone panicked. We didn't know why we were running.

Sad commentary...

Wonder how many felt when US Airways flight 1549 was heading towards the Hudson?

Everyone is looking up while the guy next to you steals your wallet.

"Oh my God, that's a hijacking, I just know it"

:banghead:

Hail to the sheeple. They have certainly bought into being scared out of their freedoms.

Reading some comments of New Yorkers on other boards...

"Some people were so shaken they had to leave for the rest of the day."

"I thought for a moment what it would be like for my children to be without a father."

... geezus people need to chill.

I wish I was in New York to see this. It would have made my week.

Very easy for us to make fun of these people, but trauma stays with you a LONG time, and you have the benefit of seeing it on a youtube video, with the facts already known, from the safety of your computer screen. Just sayin'. :o

Re: President's Jet buzzes Lady Liberty; Manhattan freaks ou

If you were in New York on 9-11-2001 (a weather morning much like today by the way) you wouldn't be telling people to chill out when they react to a foolish, ill-conceived and unpublicized aerial "photo-op".
What they experienced was an emotional flashback which caused a collective overreaction.
Hey I've got a good idea for their next shoot. Maybe these brainiacs can leave a vacated Ryder rental truck in front the Murrah federal building in Oklahoma City while they capture that moment on film.
Our collective national amnesia is not one of our better American traits.

Added to that: to those of you commenting on this thread - were you in NYC when the planes hit the towers? (Just curious. I wasn't, so I have no idea what it must have been like.)

Re: President's Jet buzzes Lady Liberty; Manhattan freaks ou

People need to quit being so goddamn PC and sensitive.

So what, people are on their toes, but it still doesn't change the fact they sound like morons commenting on something they obviously have no clue about.

Yes, let's hold their hands and tell them we'll make it all better, we'll allow warrantless wiretaps, secret lists of people, gestapo at airports, etc. It's all fine and good until the TSA inspects you and your car every morning before you leave for work and asks you what your purpose is for your trip, how far you are going, and why you want to stop and get fertilizer for your garden on the way home.

Re: President's Jet buzzes Lady Liberty; Manhattan freaks ou

It makes the military look stupid. The White House apologized, and the Mayor has chastised them. Flat out stupid.

The government has stoked the hystery by a bunch of overactions, including the scrambling fighters when an airline captain decides to divert due to a disorderly passenger. People tend to associate interceptors following a transport aircraft as a hijacking.

I mean the two fighter planes? Near Manhatten? What were they thinking??

Do I get a badge if I was? Do I get to use it as a pick up line at the bar? I know, I'll have a panic attack and use it as an excuse to take off the rest of the day.
On a side note, I fell down some stairs when I was wee lad. Now every time I see stairs that look like the ones I fell down I get a little sweaty.

Listen to you whine like a 5 year old whose ice cream cone just fell on the ground. Oh the inconvenience!!
Bet those pilots on 9-11 wished the TSA was around to "inconvenience" everyone back then.
You think we have gestapo at our airports??? :laff: :D :rotfl:You are kidding right?
Our security at our airports right now is much like our security at our borders.......a really big joke!!!
This is part of the national amnesia I referenced earlier and it will be our downfall as a nation. We don't STAY diligent.
Your "poor me I'm so inconvenienced" attitude is sickening.

I saw AF1 or its look alike today in Atlantic City Intl (ACY) doing touch and goes before landing... They took her over the casinos too, pretty cool sight!
