Pilots who annoy me...

Again, "the active" at a controlled airport is determined by the pilots not controllers. Just by saying " (aircraft 123), clear of runway 5 can help out. Try not to keep any secrets. I dont complain, I just laugh and try to have my students say the correct phraseology. The aim states that a pilot should not say "any traffic please advise" because then all the other pilots at the airport will all step on eachother on the same frequency.. this funny phraseology just makes me laugh in the airplane.

Clear of the active is one of the worst. I don't need you to tell me you're no longer on the runway. If I can't see that, I shouldn't be flying. It clogs up the radio and is completely useless.

I disagree. If the pattern is full and I am coming into the pattern, I plan out how I'm going to enter it and adjust my spacing accordingly. When a plane calls final and I don't hear from him when he clears the runway, then I am looking for him on the upwind or crosswind, thus diverting my attention from other areas of the pattern. If he calls "clear" then I can disregard him and focus my attention to other areas. The call takes less than 2 seconds and I don't see that it adds to much to the chatter, but adds a lot to the situational awareness.

JMHO. And for those of you it annoys...too bad, I am going to continue to do it, so get over it. :D

One other thing: If I am "taking runway XX for departure", this IS a correct use of the word TAKE. A word can have several meanings, and this one is not an exception. In this context, it is defined as " to have for one's benefit or use". So, I will continue to say that TOO! Hope I annoy you all lots and lots!!!!

EDIT: So I was looking at the AIM and table 4-1-1 has listed under "inbound" communications: LEAVING THE RUNWAY.

So I take it that you use your x-ray vision to see through the proverbial hump in the middle of the runway in order to confirm the airplane that just landed is clear? Trust me, in some parts of the world, the hump isn't so proverbial.

I don't think any position report is useless. Knowing an aircrafts position in relation to your own is valuable information, regardless of how useless & silly it may seem. Might save your life one day.

Ummm....HELLO!?!? Happened to forget the whole Tenerife accident??? Reporting clear of the runway is NOT something to get annoyed at. :banghead:

This goes back to where i said i am mostly annoyed by pilots who complain too much. And i am pretty sure most others agree with me. :bandit:

PLEASE call clear of the runway.

The home field has the proverbial 'hump' and i've had to query more than a handful of pilots as to weather they are clear of the runway or in a heap after waiting a bit.

I've also had an airplane take off over me while still on the runway.

I used to fly (I just left my old job) for the one of the most busy air taxis at PAMR, where UAA's flight training is located. Needless to say, I listened to a lot of "I'm a professional piloting major with 60hrs," or whatever when I was in the halls doing other classes. The best time for me was right before I left when two of the people in the local ROTC came into my work talking trash about how dangerous 135 was, and then expected me to concur. They asked me, "so what do you do here? work the ramp or something?" To which I replied, "yep, I'm a student pilot," about that time, my boss came over and said, "Hey Pat! you've got a 10:30 to beluga, 5 pax!" I grabbed my trip sheet and walked out of the office with my 5 and their mouths agape.

A week later I saw them before calculus, and they gave me a weird look, and they said, "did you really fly them?" And I said, "yep, I fly for them, and I've got about 2000TT"
:yup:Awesome.

Comparing the dynamic factors behind Tenerife, and that of a VFR pattern on a sunny day VMC, is apples and oranges. I see what you're loosely trying to say, but they are very wide comparisons of situations.

I don't necessarily call clear of the runway unless someone is/was close behind in the pattern, and then as a courtesy. If there are few planes in the pattern, or no one is in the pattern besides me, I don't worry bout it unless there are factors such as can't see one end of the runway from another.

When I read this thread, I can't help but remember...

Oh, naaaaaaaaggers...right. Naggers, of course.

I seriously can't believe what Im reading in this thread. Complaints about position reports? Complaints about "clear of the active"? You have got to be kidding me. Aren't those factors that contribute to the safety of flight? We are talking about uncontrolled airspace, relying on eachother to keep one another safe. We should omit "clear of the active" because it annoys somebody? I am shocked. I am seriosuly beset by such complaints. If I am in uncontrolled airspace I will give a position report. And I will report my position more frequently if I am in a congested practice area. And I always report clear of the active. Is any of this unsafe? Throw me a bone here because I always thought reporting clear of the active and my general position in uncontrolled airspace is the safe thing to do.

I thought it was strange that the complaint about clear of the "active" sounded like a complaint about position reports.

The usual complaint, and a valid one, is that, since at a non-towered airport, pilots can land on any runway they choose, "the active" is meaningless and "clear of runway 23" a much better position report.

"Clear of the active" doesn't give much information at places like this: http://img.airnav.com/ap/02584

does it bother anyone else when a call up to atc starts with, "and...."

I agree with this one, I surely don't get aggrivated like some of the other people commenting on this thread, but you're not continuting a conversation with ATC when you're changing frequencies.

Although, 11:00 at night, going into SGR, I'm not going to be giving 10 position reports. Perhaps one saying I'm about 5 miles out inbound to land. If I'm the only one in a 20 mile radius, I might report a final, but not clearing the runway. Now, when it's 1:30 on a Saturday afternoon at an uncontrolled field with a student pilot, then I'll have my student do quite a few more reports... Weekend warriors and other students sometimes scare me. :D

Yes. Please tell us what runway you are clear of. Unless you are at an airport with only one runway.

And these a-holes make me want to pull over to the side, get out of my airplane and beat them senseless. Pilots who fly 500' and 500' offshore in what ever weekend warrior plane they can rent.
When I was pulling rags, someone who was 500' out and 500' up couldn't have hit me if they wanted to. If I went too much above 350' I'd get a nose bleed.

That giant 40x100 sign with a beer bottle on it moving at the same rate as me gives me a reason to be that low, what is yours?
Umm... because last I checked, you don't own that chunk of air. You borrow it, but you don't own it. Weekend yahoos are just another part of the banner game. If the fact that they're there is too much heat for you, perhaps you should get out of the kitchen.
And finally, If I can see you before you see me when I'm towing a banner, I should be able to take your license.
I think you're on to something with this one in terms of cutting down on midairs. That's because if we actually did it, every single one of us, including you my friend, would end up losing our certs.
