Pilot Pete leaving Delta...

Idk who pilot Pete is. The bad ass stories from military pilots are literally the worst part about this career.

I didn’t want to dump on his airline pilot fantasy, but yeah it’s pretty funny the stuff you think is cool when starting out. I love this job/career, but I sure do have a different viewpoint than when I was starting out.

Dogfighting by yourself and flying as a crew to JFK at 4am are two very distinct skillsets. But being good at one doesn't make you good at the other. And the stories don't change that.

I absolutely get it man. It’s so frustrating and doesn’t seem fair when you see this stuff. Just a few years ago I was saying almost word for word what you’re saying. You’re a sharp guy and are doing all the right stuff. You WILL get your shot and I bet it will be soon.
Thanks man, I remember you saying similar things as well. Hope you’re well!

I haven't experienced the mil guys at UPS yet, but the mil guys at Omni were very cool, in the aggregate (as were the civ types, I should add). I flew with a street C/A who had been a test pilot in the F-14, and a young guy (like 30s, this seems young to me now) who had been a U-2 pilot, and neither of them really talked about it unless directly asked. I think that stuff is cool as heck (since hell is presumably not at all cool), so I asked; But if I hadn't, I don't think they'd have said a word. I'm sure the guys who have a "my other car is an F-15" license plate holder on their Vette and look at civilian-trained guys like something they scraped off their shoe are out there, but so far I haven't met them. I realize that the mil/civ ratio is a lot higher at UPS, so maybe I will join you guys in the irritation-line eventually. Then again, maybe not, because, as I said, I happen to think that stuff is cool if the person who did it doesn't believe it makes them of Higher Stock.

To the hiring subject, to the extent that UPS is similar to a Legacy in being a "destination job", and that is obviously subject to one's personal preferences, in my class of I think 24 (something like that), there were two regional pilots. One obviously had a BIG "in", and the other checked a minority applicant box (I have zero problem with this and do not want to start some hideous APC dogwhistle pursefight, but it goes to the larger point) AND was an LCA. Two were HIGHLY experienced 91 guys with scads of types and I believe in both cases some management experience. The other 20 of us were either military, ACMI, or both. The moral being, at least from my perspective, that (at least apocryphally, in one class, at one airline) you might have to leave your safe place to get where you want to be. Take it for what it's worth, which is probably about what you paid for it.

FWIW I am a (newly former) single seat mil jet pilot, and I dislike fighter pilots, too. I think attack pilots exist to bring balance to the force.

Thanks man. I haven’t had a bad run or anything last six years at SkyWest but I desperately do not want to spend another winter in North Dakota. The thought of another 35 hour overnight in Devils Lakes in January sends chills down my spine. I’ve had friends get the invite to interview at my “dream” job recently so there’s hope, I just don’t know what I’m missing.

You’ll probably want to avoid Huff Daland Dusters then...they do FAR and BIS overnights on the Bus

It’s like anywhere else, there will be jerks for all walks of life and all backgrounds. Some of the civilian-backgrounds I fly with who don’t know me, when they find out I flew mil, I more often than not get the “well, I was seriously considering flying military but [insert excuse here of why they didn’t]…..”. And its like I really don’t care why you did or didn’t fly mil. Whatever career choice direction you made is up to you, and it apparently worked, because you’re here. The only important thing is, can you fly safely and effectively, and can we get along. That’s all I really care about.

Now….that said, that doesn’t mean I want to hear the 20th story in a row of “oh! And this one other other other time when I was at Moline, Ill in the Saab 340, there was this [insert Wx, pax, airplane, station, inept GA traffic, instrument approach, First Officer, hotel, chief pilot, fellow pilot, other competitor airline, other mainline airline, crap pay, lousy food restaurant, union stuff story]…….”

:) :)

So there we were, at the Hilton bar in PBI, and that's when the SAME DUDE walked in to the room! Can you believe that!? We should fly together, I've got some GREAT stories. And a huge watch.

I know many guys at ExpressJet who were waiting around for their dream job and then they went from being picky to not having a job. The same thing for lots of Compass guys. Make the sacrifice and get out of the regionals to anywhere you can that has the paint match the paycheck. You really are at the mercy of the corporate overloads when you do someone else's flying. Your family should know it's gonna require a little flexibility on their part to make the dream happen, because when the music stops you better have a chair.

Clean your shiz up. SkyWest Pilot Recruitment just emailed me. Say they're getting 8 more 175's to fly in your paint.

What's your status

HIV- thank you for asking. But in relation to SKYW, I have 500 tt. I have to update my SKYW pilot advisor of my hours every three months. SKYW either bought or poured money into Southern Air Exp., so they have a time building option with them for their cadets. Allegedly. Allegedly.
