Phraseology Nazis

It seems that the people who get worked up are mostly low time pilots with something to prove, while the professionals do not care as much. Strange.

The thing wrong is your high horse while invoking retarded. You say without a shadow of a doubt you're right about one thing, but in the next breath admit you don't know everything.

You're right. There was absolutely no doubt in my mind that "6.5" and "fishfinder" are wrong. I never said that I know everything, and fail to see how you got that from my post.

I do my best to stick to standard RT when I'm flying. There have been enough accidents in the past where non-standard RT was a contributing factor for me to see that sounding "cool" may not equate to staying safe.

Oh and hey settle a standing bet in this thread, what segment of the industry do you work in right now?

I may not be in my approved uniform while I'm transmitting on VHF this week too!

LOL

what are the top 3 choices?

Top 3 choices? Or my top 3 bets? My personal bets are:

1. Commercial pilot, aspires to be employed one day.

2. Flight instructor, attempting to set a good example to his students, or...

3. A pre solo student pilot.

So, which is it?

I just did lesson 3 with my CFI this week and he says I may be able to solo 3-4 weeks from now if I fly every day :D

Option 2 is correct. What did I win?

What you'll win will be some perspective in a few years time.

I've been in the same shoes as you, and while hearing left final, 6.5 for 10 and the like much be frustrating, they're not career ending, nor operation ending phrases. People saying left final used to kill me, and we had one guy that would preface EVERYTHING on the CTAF with, "Arlington traffic, Arlington traffic" (YES, TWICE!), but in the end we just made fun of the Arlington traffic guy and folks turning left final we just looked out for.

You don't need to make THAT good of an example for your students. Teach them to be good pilots before you teach them to be proper radio nazis.

You're right, they're not career ending (in the US), but I never know when non-standard RT will contribute to an accident one day, so I try to keep it standard all the time.

The "ABC traffic, ABC traffic" thing kills me too. There's a CFI who does it and it drives me nuts, especially when the frequency is crowded.

I get that one day it may not make a difference, but I still say that part of being a good pilot is sticking to standard RT.

You don't need to get into it with someone not in your airplane, but you are correct and you should stick to your guns. Those that say or imply you'll (with more 'years under your belt') join that crowd and start talking non-standard need to review their own procedures. It is not a huge deal in the U.S., but the habits are bad and can lead to reduced safety. Internationally it is much more serious.

Well, I hate to know that blood vessels may be bursting when I transmit "FLG 12-34 flight level two niner tree climbing flight level tree two zero"

Speaking of "Fish finder"... "I've got him on the 'fishfinder'/'TCAS'" is the ATC equivalent of saying "Yippie skippy blah blah blah" because it means nothing.

Traffic in sight or negative contact.
