People...

Ahhh, but pilots be happy that passengers let us fly them around? Aren't they the reason that pilots exist?

While true, you do (at some point) have to draw a line. If someone comes up to me and says "@&(*&^$, I'm gonna be late for my meeting b/c you had to divert around those Level 5 thunderstorms. I'm never flying this airline again" or "Why did we have to go around? I doubt the windshear was THAT bad," I'm not going to just say "Thank you, sir. May I have another." I realize that the passengers are the ones that pay our salaries. I was just pointing out that we're not the only ones that have bad instances stuck in our heads when it comes to this crazy thing we call aviation.

From now on, the stock answer, delivered with utter gravitas and dead-eye contact.

"If we don't dodge storms/turn back because of ice/fix mx/ then we all die."

And say nothing else. Nothing. But maintain eye contact.

I would pay to see that, I would.

Sidenote: See Kristie? I'm not the only one who uses the word "gravitas"! ;)

I've found a problem with flying boxes. No "stupid passenger" stories.

What about silly box stories?

"What so was my bag ticking or something?"

"Actually modern bombs don't tick, they vibrate. 9 times out of 10 it's an electric razor, but every once in a while it's a..."

Those stupid customers in the back should just sit down, shut up, and be glad that pilots are willing to fly them around . . . :sarcasm:

Actually, yeah. You paid for a ticket. You didn't pay to get waited on hand and foot!

So take a spot in your seat, don't disturb others, and you'll get where you paid to get. Can't ask for more!

Hey come on all you airline folks, its not like all the passengers are always in the know, especially if they don't fly commerically often, to them its a whole different world.

As far as airline passengers go, I don't fly commerically too much and I always end up being "that guy".

I was flying MidWest from ATL-MKE-RHI-IWD (if you're thinking RHI? IWD? its cause they're tiny little uncontrolled airports in N. WI and Upper MI) which involved me deplaning in MKE onto a B1900. This is the first time I ever had to tranfer flights and it was a pretty new experience. Anyways I took a little nap after take off only to awaken to a bunch of people walking down the isle getting off the plane so I got off with everyone else. Walking into the small little terminal building I noticed a sign that said "Welcome to Rhinelander (RHI)". Realizing I got off at the wrong airport I went back outside, which ended up on the sole TSA agent bolting outside and grabbing me by the arm. Anyways I explained I got off in the wrong stop he notified the sole ramp agent who then told the pilots via UNICOM who were in the process of getting ready to taxi out on the way to Ironwood.
Hey my tickets said ATL-MKE and MKE-IWD and said nothing about stopping at RHI. After going through security again I went back to the plane, one of the pilots opened the door all pissed off and said "Way to go man, now we're going to be late, we should have left you here." ---- now saying stuff like that will make your jaw hurt, but I'm a nice guy. I did feel pretty stupid though. But it just goes to show that us not accoustomed to air travel are not trying to ruin your day, we just need some extra guidence. I mean you just don't up to some kid with down syndrom struggling to count out change for a vending machine and call him a retard, no, you do the decent thing and help him buy that snickers bar, the same courtesy should be applied to all passengers whether they know what they're doing or not, hell they paid enough for it.

I'm not sure where it came from, but while reading your story I got this picture of Mr. Bean doing what you were describing.

See, that stuff I don't mind and consider it part of our job to help out. BTW, the guys mouthing off to you as you got back on is TOTALLY unprofessional. I just don't like it when people get uptight and pissy about things that are either a) not our fault or b) dead ass wrong (see Doug's GUMPs check post). Generally, it's the people with a little bit of knowledge that think they know everything that fall into that category.

BTW, Firebirds=great, cheesy movie

I was a waiter/bartender for six years from my junior year in high school to my senior year in college so I know how to treat people and to be tactful or no tip. Without PAX we wouldn't have a job.

It was the tone she asked me. It seemed like she was fishing for information. This lady had NO business questioning me why I did what I did. NONE. We are told to handle minors a certain way. When you have a passenger ask you a question in these days you have to ask yourself "Why are they asking me this?"

"Is this woman trying to burn me?", "Is she a pervert?" Those are questions that went through my mind.

I worked to hard to have this #$%$# burn me.

Thanks for playing Monday morning QB, appreciate it!

hey man, didn't mean to offend. just seen some serious lack of customer service in my travels lately and it really makes me wonder a bit. sorry if i misunderstood the situation. next time just backhand each pax as the board the aircraft so they know you ain't play'n! gotta get yourself one of those belts that Pootie-Tang had so you can just turn around from the cockpit and *snap the s**t outta someone. "Sir, it's a bit cold back here...."***SNAP***"anybody else cold?!?!?!?"

Shouldnt the count of passengers been off for the flight, and them figure it out BEFORE closing up???? They should of know the number for the flight for the W&B.

Ahh, but that is perhaps one of the biggest parts of the problem. They DIDN'T pay enough for it!!! When passengers start to have to pay what the fare is actually worth perhaps then some things will begin to improve.

I don't know bro...politeness doesn't add anything to an airline's overhead cost.

Am I the only one who thinks that expensive tickets, hot FA's, and plenty of freebies would solve a lot of this industry's ills?
Enough with the Greyhound already, lets see some jet-setting!!!

*fills out SWA app*

A li'l less LCC and a little more Singapore Airlines you're saying? :)

AAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!
Ohhhhh my Sweet Jesus on the Cross that's funny!
I was almost mad at you for making me spew black coffee all over my monitor.
Pure Jenius man, pure Jenius.
That is definitely going in my funny portfolio.

Glad to know I could help!!!

:)

Should. I don't know how it works on the 1900 since they don't have a FA, but our FAs count the empty seats to determine how many passengers are on board vs how many the gate agent has boarded. If the number doesn't match, we double/triple check.

We counted pax at Eagle, but not at AA unless the agent thought something was amiss and in that case the agent would be the one counting.
