People...

Soooo.... is ignorance fo the law a valid excuse? ;)

No, but how many people realize that what he did was interfering with a cockpit crew member's duties? Mark informed him, and told him that he could be arrested for it - and that seemed to do the trick. Sometimes, that's enough.

If a clan of Mormon Missionaries is bothering you, and you tell them that you don't want them to tresspass on your property, and that you'll call the police if they don't leave, they'll probably leave. Now, you could probably still call the police, but why?

I'm thank god every day there's a door that locks between me and these people. Tough break for the t-prop guys, but If I had a pax suddenly tap me on the shoulder in flight the last thing that would go through thier head is my crash axe. I occasionally get stupid questions shot at me when I'm heading back to the lav. Answers most commonly given: A) It's a federal regulation, that's why. B) Ever been in a traffic jam? That's why were delayed. C) Sir/Ma'am, I'm needed on the flight deck. I'll send the Flight Attendant to gather your garbage/get you a soda/blanket/pillow/.

That said, I'm a sucker for little old ladies and people with more that one kid to herd around. I'll bend over backwards to help those types out.

A friend of a friend use to fly the EMB-110 and he told us they were on approach into ATL one night and some asian tourist (not discrimintating) pulled the divider/curtain back and as they were just over the threshold he snaps of several pics...with the flash.....needless to say they both had looked at the idiot when the flash went off. He said lucky for them between the 2 of them they got the vision enough back to see...He told us he wanted to punch this guys lights out...

As a ramp agent who had to go upstair and deliver paper to gate agent I think I have heard just about every complaint or excuse under the sun. Doug is right the bigger the plane the bigger the problems. Everybody wants an aisle seat or a free upgrade to FC. People there are only so many of those seats available and you cant come up at departure time and expect to get it even if you are a goozillion miler. I dont miss that by no means. I would have sucked or been fired as a gate agent....

enough years of restaurant/C.S. work and you learn how to deal with these kinds of things. if you're a waiter/ress and talk to your customers like that, then no tippy for you...you learn quickly how to get your point across, while also apeasing the customer. of course flying and serving are a seemingly distant analogy, but everything relates when it comes to customer service. just explain the situation, no B.S., and in a way a non-pilot can understand and things tend to be ok. now, that last thing with the customer who questioned you about moving the Chinese lady, man, sorry, but you handeled that like a complete • from what it sounds. why didn't you just let the lady know the situation. didn't need to say much. "ma'am, that young man was traveling alone and i am resposible for his safety from gate to gate, so i like to put kids in that situation in a seat that i can easily see from the cockpit." nuff said. why threaten to call TSA???

I was a waiter/bartender for six years from my junior year in high school to my senior year in college so I know how to treat people and to be tactful or no tip. Without PAX we wouldn't have a job.

It was the tone she asked me. It seemed like she was fishing for information. This lady had NO business questioning me why I did what I did. NONE. We are told to handle minors a certain way. When you have a passenger ask you a question in these days you have to ask yourself "Why are they asking me this?"

"Is this woman trying to burn me?", "Is she a pervert?" Those are questions that went through my mind.

I worked to hard to have this #$%$# burn me.

Thanks for playing Monday morning QB, appreciate it!

We go out of our way to help these travelers out! We put kids in the cockpit seat, take pictures, have them put on that hat. That goes a long way.

That has happened to us a few times as well. People have done that almost blinding us.

Ahh no. I do enjoy flying the Dolphin, and 99.999999 percent of the time we have awesome PAX. They just seem to cluster on one flight.

Do you work for Colgan?

no, but i feel your pain, man, what with no door and all

i think the gate agent should stand by the prop, not the f/o

I had a guy write a strongly worded letter to the chief pilot that myself and the captain weren't following proper procedures and needed to be suspended.

We failed to go a "GUMP" check.

The mixture and prop controls weren't fully forward upon landing.

...on a Beech 1900, with PT-6A-67D's...

I've got a billion "Man, I wish I flew boxes" stories, but you'll have to wait until

How's that for a plug? :)

Just a few days ago, while waiting in the runup area for our flow time to come up, the flight attendant calls. She says a passenger is worried, and told her to tell us that he didn't hear the rpm drop when we checked the mags (in a brasilia). That was good for about 5 minutes of the loudest and most stress-relieving laughter i've ever experienced. :bandit:

The -1900 has a PT-6 which is a free-air turbine (I know YOU know that, but some of my readers don't).

So the props will windmilll significantly in even a light breeze.

Our procedure, while emplaning/deplaning, was to bring the spin the prop from a "+" to a "X" and stand in front of it with the blade in your back. That way no one would walk into the blade getting onboard, or would get whacked if it was windmilling. Plus, you were in a good position to help if someone missed the last step and is about to take a 'header' on the ramp.

Basically, when arriving, you stand at the door until the prop stops spinning, run downstairs, put the 'mini-step' at the base of the airstairs, spin the prop so it forms and "X" and allow to passengers to deplane themselves.

Well, that day I felt a little spunky so I spun it all the way around and caught it.

The next group of passengers come out and this old man says, (and remember, put this into a Lars 'n Jurg from Wisconsin voice) "Hey YOOO. I don't know what dag gum flight school you went to there hey, but YOO do NAAT stand in DA arc of DA PRAP until the captain puts the keys on DA dashboard so YOOO KNOOO da MAGnetoes are AAAAF there buster."

I said, "Thank you sir, I stand corrected" and tried my best not to laugh.

Yah sure hey, you bethcha, DOOn't ya KNOOO. Me and Jurg going down to da ice sheck for a skosh of beer, hey!

YEP! I do have to say though, I LOVE my job and am very fortunate I love getting up in the morning going to work. A lot of people I know that I am close to can't say that.

Yessterday I got up at 5:45 AM drove 3:30 hours from New Jersey to Albany. Did 6 legs. Block was 7:30 but flew 8:32 4 Approaches to close to Mins. Two ILSs 15R in BOS, the VOR 15 (I think) to SYR and then the LOC 19 in ALB. Went off duty at 11:30 PM

6.2 of handflying in actual :)

Don't 1900's have an autopilot?

not until after the 3rd time tho.. how long would you let that continue before you gotta say "sit down and shut up"... how many tries would you let him jab? even 2 could have been too many....it was risky for him to even be there - besides, isn't it against the law to even open a cockpit door now a days? even on the smaller partition board type crafts?

Basically, I've seen it handled like this:

1. "Sir, sit down".
2. "Sir, if you do not sit down immediately you are violating federal law by not complying with the directive of a flight crewmember"
3. Call the airport police. They LOVE dealing with disgruntled passengers, trust me.

It's entertaining at times, they always become very coy once the good guys arrive.
