Oh Delta...why oh why?

I can't wait til my student-pilot ass (you can totally, etc. etc.) is on the same freq as @Seggy during a cross country or something. He's gonna love the drivel I come out with on the mic. :D

Holding short of 23R in RDU waiting for Departure.

Delta: "Delta 123 Visual 23R"

RDU Tower: "Delta 123 cleared to land"

Delta: "Delta 123 cleared to land, can you turn up the lights please?"

(It was 17:37 local)

RDU Tower: "Ahhhh, OK"

Delta: "Yep, we are doing a practice CAT III Autoland and want the lights up."

Me (thinking to myself): WHAT IN THE BLOODY HELL

They were in a 737-800 and I know at my place you can do a CAT III Autoland any time even during the day with no lights on. Why, if you are doing a practice CAT III Autoland, do you need the lights? What is the policy at your place @Kingairer ? What is it like at the airline formerly known as AirTran @ATN_Pilot ?

We figured it was better to do that, than stop in the face of a 767-300ER and wait for the (somewhat obvious) instruction. And they were too busy untangling a standoff between Air China, China Eastern, and American down at the other end of the airport.

In fact, the only time that I've heard ORD read someone a phone number was when an Airline Canada Lite/Express/Whatever They Are Now stopped between the inner and the outer...
