New San Diego startup: California Pacific Airlines

I'm surprised nobody has posted anything on this. California Pacific Airlines is a new startup airline in North County San Diego and pending government approval will operate by the end of 2010 out of Carlsbad's Palomar Airport. They will be flying E170s and already have some on order. The CEO operated a successful charter airline for 17 years out of San Diego and Carlsbad (Air Resorts Airlines) and all of their management have a lot of airline experience.

I hope this airline takes off (no pun intended) and becomes successful. It'll be a great product for the large North County population that has to normally drive down to SAN in 1 hr of bumper-to-bumper traffic.

Here's their proposed route map:

I got the Chief Pilots business card laying on my desk here. I do hope it works out for them, especially in these hard economic times. Last I checked though, they haven't even filed for government approval, yet. Usually that takes quite some time, so Im not sure how they want to be up and flying at the end of the year. I was told of a launch date of this November. We will see.

I remember Air Resorts CV-340s and -440s there at the west end of CRQ in the early '80s.

I really hope this is successful. North San Diego would be all over this buying tickets.

I know the DO pretty well. They seem to have their ducks in a row.

They are planning for a October/November startup if everything goes well from what I've heard.

Ok. no one's asked it, how long will they last? The 89 year old founder sounds like a good guy but this seems like a personal project than something that's needed. if I was him I would have left all the millions to the family rather than for the fuel costs to outlast Southwest and company.

I'm convinced that there is not an aviation job/opportunity posted in this country without you knowing about it. :)

This looks like it has been needed for a long time. I do note the absence of LAX, ONT or BUR in the mix.

All 3 are too close to Carlsbad (unless they operate those short routes for connecting flights or code share flights for other airlines). With the time it takes to check in, get through security, taxi time, and flight time to LAX, then taxi to the gate, pick up a rental car at LAX, etc, you've just wasted an extra 2 hours. Much quicker to drive.

Eh...I wouldn't compare this to XE's branded service. This is hub and spoke all from one point, Expressjet's was point...to point...to point.

Quasi point to point. The P2P model on the West Coast evolved into a hub-like service with Ontario and San Diego being the 'hubs'. XJT's CEO talked about this evolution a few times on earnings calls.

I met this owner at a bar here in Carlsbad. Nice guy and he told me about this new airline he was starting. It's been done before and unsuccessful so we will see. It will add to an already extremely busy airport with GA, corporate, and already Skywest operates several flights a day to LAX and back.

The old PSA had a big following there. Maybe Airways should sell them the name and logo for $$$ Merge current PSA with another of their operating certificates...We could be Piedmont fast and Piedmont could be Pied slow. :D
