New GI Bill and Flight Training

Received this email today from MSU's Aviation Office:
---------------------------------------

To All MSU Aviation Students,

In order to provide you with transfer options we have been actively seeking to build relationships with other colleges and universities. While this process is not complete, there are three schools that have been particularly helpful in this regard.

It is premature for us to suggest you apply to any of these schools just yet, as we are still in discussions and they may be willing to make some special arrangements with you to help with the transfer process. However, I would like you to know the names of these schools so that you can start doing your research in determining the best fit. We hope to have more specific information available early next week, but for now check out the following:

Everglades University, www.evergladesuniversity.edu
Thomas Edison State College, www.tesc.edu
Utah Valley University, www.uvu.edu

Each of these institutions has been very cooperative. I don’t expect there is a one size fits all solution, but now is a good time to begin checking out your options.

Remember, early next week we will have more specific info.

On a related note, we expect to have approval of a HLC approved teach-out plan by the end of the month. This info will also help you with your decisions.
--------------------------------------------

I emailed back this:

Thanks for this info. I assume that creating teach out plans is only in case the appeals process does not end favorably for MSU? Also, for the VA guys, should I not do any more flying in case the VA tries to come after the funds they already provided? Also, have any of the conversations with these 3 schools involved Post 9-11 GI Bill students? I already know that UVU does not include flight labs in the tuition, so would not be covered under the GI Bill.

and got this in response. I feel really bad for the MSU staff who had no part in how the college went in the direction in did in order to ultimately get to where it is now...

--------------
As I understand the VA funding issue, I don’t think the VA will want the money back. Jennifer Lamb is the expert in that area. You may wish to speak with her if you have specific questions.

The three schools mentioned do not participate in Yellow Ribbon. So far I do not know of a good alternative school that does.

MSU’s future does not look good, I’m sorry to say. Ironically, the transfer and teach out needs to be in place and implemented before the appeal process. Kind of gives you an idea what our appeal chances are, eh?

Bollocks.

I have found a college near me that has teamed up with a local 141 school that has started to offer flight training through the local flight school. So, I should be able to get the training done through an IHL after all, its just 70 miles each way, I can handle that. Also, I did find a community college in the next state over that I didnt know about, doing the same thing. So, MSU/ATP was not my only option. My point is, make sure you do you research. Just because you cant google it doesnt mean it isn't out there. I found this the old fashioned way - there may still be hope for you guys too.

Got the email from MSU an hour ago that since I'm more than 24 hours from graduating, I'm not eligible to enroll for the fall. They just got word that their teach out period was only granted thru Dec. 31st so basically I'm SOL. Yaaay....

I'm kind of at the point that if the MSU thing falls through, I'll take it as a sign to take a step back, finish up my IT degree. I was super blessed this Feb. when I got a job dropped into my lab at a National Laboratory doing IT for the Nuclear Engineering division...Really, I should be in no hurry to take a 60% pay cut....

I agree... If you have a stable income, you can always save and do it later ... In my case, I don't need to lose anymore time. Since I have a house in Phoenix, this is the perfect opportunity. Direct transition from military to civilian flying in a way...

Dear Student,

A new development came about for the Aviation Department yesterday. We are currently waiting to hear how this new development will proceed and expect to know something definite early next week. If you are still interested in continuing your degree then you may send your registration to me but I will be holding all registrations until mid-week next week. I will send you updates as soon as I can but please do not call the office at this time. If you have questions or concerns please contact me via email and I will do my best to respond accurately to your questions. Thank you for your patience.

Waiting for that "ta da" sound now... Dun dun dun is too dramatic.

I met a guy on Google Plus... He said he flew in a flight school near his home in CT and got his degree online from UVU. Not sure if he is a veteran though. Did you look at UVU?

I'm starting ASU/ATP this Thursday and it's nice to see $0.00 in your school balance man... :-)

If anyone is using their Post 9-11 GI Bill, has the VA covered your checkride fees? Just ran into this, and I told ATP I didn't have $450 to drop, so they covered the checkride, but I'm of the feeling that this is a required aspect of the training, and thus should be covered? What's been your experience?

Bushmaster78FS, awesome to hear you're starting man!! I'm going to try and get out to PHX on my crew XC time building...(will need to take a week off to do it though...)

There was some controversy over the checkrides where I went. First it was covered through whatever extra flight fee money you had on account, but I think it was worked out to cover them in the extra flight fees "class." If you find that your flying account is deducted, you should bring it up because usually the checkrides are required to graduate/get into the next class.

I'm with mat on this, there was a question like this floating around on Facebook Student Veterans group and it's all how your school deals with. I haven't asked ASU about it yet, I'll cross that bridge when I'm taking my first check ride

Anyone doing the 2-yr Pulaski Technical College Aviation program coupled with Central Flying Service in Little Rock, AR? I'm going to start that one pretty soon and was just seeing if anyone has been there and what their experience has been regarding VA payments/ instructors, etc...

I guess thats why my MSU rep hasnt responded in a few days. Now Ive got no local options, and I cant move either -

That's my problem, as well. Not 1 option in the greater Los Angeles area. I think that what has happened is that the VA doesn't really want to pay for flight training, so they make the requirements so nebulous that there aren't any schools that offer a qualifying program. That way, they can say they're offering a benefit, when in actuality, they're not...

Pretty sneaky... :sarcasm:

I have been unable to reach anyone at the VA regarding some Post-9/11 GI Bill questions I have. Their phone # wont get me through, and the emails I have sent have gone unanswered for 3 weeks now. Does anyone have any suggestions or contact #s they may be able to suggest? Thanks! (I am in the Northeast Region).
