New FAA Writtens (ATPw = 30h ground + 6hr Level C Sim from Aug-14)

I have no issues on prep, I take your point on proficiency - maybe I should say challenge or extending knowledge. Though taking it in Jun '13 and then taking however long to build up the hours to take the practical doesn't exactly help proficiency does it!

How many hours did you have when you took it @subpilot?
I see what you are saying and completely understand. Just know that the ATP test has about zero bearing on the flying portion of check ride and only minimal on the oral. I would take it as soon as you are ready and hang on to your certificate. Anyone who even has a chance of getting to the minimum hours in the next two years should. Flight schools are salivating about the new, tougher requirements. It means lots more money in their pockets. Congressmen are high fiving each other, airlines are shrugging their shoulders, and meanwhile the flying public isn't any safer. The Colgan accident was more about the ridiculous set of circumstances that regional pilots are forced to live under rather than training, but what do I know, I don't make the rules.

Could someone with only a PPL have a chance of taking - and passing - the ATP written by only using Sheppard?

You don't need your ATP to fly part 135. I have a few friends building all the time they need at 135 jobs.

That depends on the job. It's not a requirement for the FAA, but it is a CAMTS requirement for Air Ambulance. Some companies do training at FSI which would likely count, but some do not.

Sure. It wouldn't hurt to get Sheppard to study with and if you are genuinely passing the practice tests you should have no problem.

Easily. It is rote memorization with some aids to help remember things with patterns. If you can memorize things reasonably well, you can pass the ATP. My 10 year old could pass it with Sheppard Air. Their question bank IS the question bank and is continuously updated.

Seem like something to knock out then as I hope to have 1500 hrs by August 2016. I only have my private right now but about to begin working on knocking out the rest.

But it would still only be good for two years, right? So if I wasn't at 1500 by August 2016 I would have to retake the new ATP written?

One idea I had, was that maybe if airlines become desperate enough, after interviewing an applicant they will put them through an ATP course?

The intent of the reg is that initial 121 training and/or a type rating course already meet the requirements of the ATP written.

If you go 121 or 135 route then you can use an expired written test for the Checkride. Me: written completed Aug 06/ Checkride completed Dec 13.

That is no longer true. You have to take the check ride within 24 calendar months of passing the written. No exemption for 135/121.

Doesn't stop them from having a one stop shop for airlines to send people who qualify minus the ATP written. Like I said if they get disparate enough. Right now they're picking up people who must have ATP written complete already.

Cool, the more you know! I wasn't sure, but I thought that may be the case.

As far as I know anything else is just commercial. 135 single engine IFR with pax doesn't require and ATP and 135 multi engine IFR cargo doesn't require an ATP. I don't know about seaplanes. I think multi-engine scheduled with pax may require it (i.e. seaborne captain), but I don't know.

I also used Sheppard air for the ATP written and got a 91 %. Also used it for FOI,FIA, and CFII. I can't say enough good things about it! I took the ATP written July 2013 with 350 hours because I heard it may be August 1st, 2013 not 2014 for the written rule. Well, just gives me more motivation to get my time and take the check ride before July 31st 2015! Should be no problem.

I'd be curious about: How will ATP flight school comply with this? Not more weekend Seminole courses. As well as the helicopter world, I have numerous friends that earned their ATPs in the R22. Will this affect the rotorcraft world also?

That is right along the lines of what I've been wondering. Seems like there are several operators that prefer for you have an ATP, even if it isn't required. I assume that it's better for insurance, but I don't know to what extent. I wonder if there will be a period in which some people may be at a disadvantage for these types of jobs without having an ATP - and not willing to pay an exorbitant amount to get the ATPC on their own.
Secondly, will there be some way for ATP, ERAU and the like, or Redbird, to find a way to make this course economically feasible for the individual? - vice the estimated $10K this May cost at a FSI or CAE.
Haven't heard or read about changes to rotor wing reqs. I don't know if they were affected at all since this was all spurred on by actions in the 121 world.

.

Word around the flightline is that it will be around the same price here at Riddle. They are still trying to work out the course itself so only time will tell I guess. Sigh :(
